The Great Rebellion gets a bit more royal with the addition of Queen Angella this month. Let’s take a look at Queen Angella!
Real Name: Angella the Third, Queen Regent of Bright Moon
Angella was the regent queen of one of Etheria’s largest kingdoms. After Hordak invaded her planet, Bright Moon was overthrown and Angella and all her subjects were declared slaves of the Horde Empire. Believing in her heart that all people have the right to be free, Angella was the first monarch to openly fight back against the oppression of the Horde. Forming the Great Rebellion with other key leaders, she brought her people to the safety of the Whispering Woods, just outside of Hordak’s evil influence. There they regrouped and formed an attack squad to wage war and once again free Eternia and all of its people. After Hordak abandoned Etheria, Angella stayed behind to help rebuild her kingdom and the beauty of the planet. Beautiful and helpful, Angella is lovely and very intuitive—she can sense when danger is near and has the ability to fly like an angel.
This doesn’t quite fit with my memory of the events of Secret of the Sword, the She-Ra origin movie. Sure, Glimmer was hiding out in the woods, but after they rescue Angella, she rallies her kingdom to fight off the Horde (with He-Man and She-Ra’s help, of course).
I’m missing a reference to Hunga the Harpy in there. It’s one of the things I liked about the Secret of the Sword was the random inclusion of a dangerous group of Harpies on Etheria.
It showed that the place wasn’t all candy cane trees and twiggets even before the Horde showed up and it is one of the episodes that featured Angella.
Angella comes with a new sword and translucent plastic halo, both of which are cast in solid plastic.
The sword has an interesting, almost triangular blade and some shiny metallic silver paint highlights. It seems a little utilitarian for a queen, but I like the idea of giving the POP characters real weapons to fight the Horde.
The halo plugs into Angella’s back just above the wings so from the front it looks as though it’s floating behind her head. It’s a neat effect, though a little on the nose for a woman with angel wings to also have a halo.
Well, her name is Angella, so I suppose it’s in line with that and it’s also a vintage feature. As a Filmation guy, I thought I wouldn’t use it, but I like the look actually.
Angella has a pretty head sculpt that captures the vibe of the Filmation design well. The outfit is Filmation perfect down to the super huge collar and includes some cool belt and bodice details to spice up the overall look.
The wings are designed and sculpted similarly to the DCUC Hawkman and Hawkwoman wings and look spectacular. I don’t think the leotard solution is perfect, but I like the look more than the “pizza slice” look on Glimmer and Octavia. She does seem a tad shorter than she should next to Glimmer, but that, I think, is more of a Glimmer issue than a Angella one.
Angella has the standard MOTUC female articulation, though her ankles don’t have any real rocker movement. It’s always a bummer to see that POA go because it’s so helpful in dynamic posing. The leotard does impede some hip movement because it is glued down in front. The wings have a forward/backward hinge where they connect to Angella’s back and each wing is hinged so that it can be in a resting and extended pose.
Paint is solid, if not spectacular, but I don’t think I want a lot of washes/dry brushing on my POP characters since they are so bright and clean.
Angella is a good figure and does everything I think she should for an Angella figure. I think I would be more excited to get her if I thought I might get a Red Knight or Hunga the Harpy figure to go with her.
