Batros is the third figure in the six figure Filmation subscription and the third villain. I like that ration! Let’s take a closer look at the villainous one-episode wonder BATROS!
Batros™ Bio
Real Name: Wiley
Deep in the Dark Hemisphere resides a treacherous race of half-man half-bat pirates–none more sinister than Batros™, a shadowy mercenary-for-hire. Batros™ views alliances with contempt, but pairs up with Skeletor® when it gets him closer to his goal of seizing the Powers of Grayskull™ for himself. In one adventure, Batros™ conspired with the Overlord of Evil™ to filch all royal records and books from the Eternos Library. Although this shady plot ultimately met with failure, Batros™ remained a stealthy enemy of the Masters of the Universe® and all who fight for freedom on Eternia®. Batros™ is a dark mercenary trained in the art of thievery!
So Batros is a type of bat-creature that is prone to piracy. That’s interesting to me as he looks more like a guy dressed in a bat costume more than he looks like a bat creature. It does seem odd that Eternia spawned two different man/bat species between Batros’ people and the Speleans (represented by Dactus).
I do like that he is mentioned as the most sinister of his group of pirates. It makes him sound more important and he does stand up to Skeletor in Filmation, so that tracks.
Accessories
Batros comes with a repainted mace from Spikor, and while it’s a nice repaint, he does seem a little light on the accessories. Also, the mace is made of slightly softer plastic, so it can bend and droop a little if heated.
Batros reuses parts from:
- Tri-Klops: upper body, legs and lower arms
- Demo-Man: hands
Batros has a new head sculpt, new biceps with attached wings, a harness, a neck fur piece, and boots. The head is a great match for the Filmation ‘toon, complete with tiny little vampire teeth that stick out of his mouth at all times.
The furry sculpt on the boots, headress, and collar add some nice detail to the fairly simple Filmation design and helps bring the cartoony look more in line with the MOTUC aesthetic.
The wings and harness also have a detailed texture that makes these large blank areas more interesting.
The red symbol on the harness is sculpted in a way that does make it clear that Batros is not actually a Horde member. I’m fine with that as the Horde is plenty big and Eternia can always use more independently operating villains.
Articulation
Batros has the standard MOTUC articulation. The loincloth piece is flexible and the wings do not hinder articulation at all.
Paint on Batros is great. The fur sculpt has a light highlight to it, and the black belt and wrist gauntlets have a gloss black trimming that adds a nice finishing touch to the figure.
The purple skin is an ideal flat purple plastic and has the semi-standard shading that adds muscle definition.
Final Thoughts
Batros was not a character particularly high on my wish list, but the final figure turned out really nice. Batros is a good basic figure, though a little light on the accessories.
Special thanks to customizer He-Mike for the custom Skeleton warrior figures and the extra skeleton parts used in this feature.
