Mattel debuted the concept of the online chase figure with The Spirit of Hordak figure last year, and despite a lot of fan complaints, they are continuing the program this year with Loo-Kee and Kowl. Fortunately the set lasted a while online at early access this month so I was able to order one. Let’s take a closer look at Loo-Kee and Kowl.
Accessories
These little guys are basically accessories themselves, but the pack does come with a flight stand.
The stand plugs into the tiny peg holes at the bottom of both Loo-Kee and Kowl’s feet, and the figures balance well on it.
It’s a nice idea for a flying character like Kowl, but it’s a little short in terms of how high Kowl did actually fly in the show (usually at shoulder height of the humans), and he’s sculpted in a standing pose rather than flying.
The sculpt on these two matches the Filmation feel to perfection, though I do like that the detail is amped up slightly on Kowl. The ruff around Kowl’s neck has some cool feather details that were only hinted at on the show.
Both Kowl and Loo-Kee are appropriately cute and the scale feels right to me.
The only modification to Loo-Kee’s sculpt I would have liked is a hand with a pointing finger. He oftentimes pointed at the camera when making his points at the end of each She-Ra episode, but the waving hands are just as appropriate, so it’s a minor quibble.
These are almost slug figures, so articulation is minimal. They both have neck and arm swivels and Loo-Kee has a swivel at his tail.
I do understand why you would limit the articulation on a figure this small, but I think leg swivels would have been a nice add for Kowl to simulate flying poses a little better.
Paint on these two is pretty basic with no real shading, but the detail lines are pretty clean and sharp. Kowl is really a repaint of the one that came with the last weapons pack, and, as a Filmation fan, this is the one I really wanted.
Hopefully everybody who wants these figures can get a hold of them. I’m feeling pretty hopeful that they will because they lasted a good while on early access sale. They are a little cheaper than the basic figure, but it does feel like a bit of a gouge to pay $20 for basically two slug figures with minimal articulation.
I am very glad to have them, though, because they are both a big part of the She-Ra show.
The Great Rebellion is really filling out nicely.
