Mattel: WWE 1-2-3 Kid

DSC_6131

We’ve already gotten one version of Sean Waltman’s wrestling alter egos with the Elite 33 X-Pac, but with the continued influx of New Generation stars, I was highly anticipating the addition of the 1-2-3 Kid in Elite Series 41.

Mattel is steadily progressing in cranking out more Flashbacks, which is good because there’s still a SLEW of legends I want in Mattel’s WWE line, not to mention alternate gimmicks of several guys. I’m still not-so-patiently awaiting a One Man Gang, NWA Dusty Rhodes, and Stunning Steve Austin. And Waltman’s third and final major gimmick — Syxx.

Hopefully that’s a review coming in the not so distant future. For now, let’s check out 1-2-3 Kid.

I remain a huge fan of the new Elite packaging style. It looks really dynamic and I love how it has unique elements for the various brands. I still would like to get more information on those bios, but it’s my only gripe about the package setup.

DSC_6145The picture chosen for Kid isn’t the best, though, as it’s more based on his latter heel run when he was a cornerstone of The Million Dollar Corporation.

Mattel’s sculptors went an odd way with the likeness, going more for an intense, focused look for the Kid. That’s not how I imagine most people envision him. He’s one of the rare cases when an open-mouth sculpt would have been fitting for the character.

Fortunately, that screwy likeness only extends to the head. The rest of the figure is great. Mattel seems to have used a less defined, smaller torso. I was very glad to see he wasn’t given a Bret Hart type torso, which would have been too bulky and cut for the Kid. His arms are more muscular than I’d like, but his legs are smaller than the average figure.

DSC_6134Mattel has always done a better than average job with the scale. Kid was 6 feet tall and his figure reflects that height as he’s shorter than the Bret Hart (6’1″), Razor Ramon (6’5″), and Diesel (6’9″) figures.

The paint job might be my favorite aspect of the figure. The intricate wraparound tights design is faithfully captured just like it was a supersized version of the Hasbro figure. The paint on my figure was nice and clean, which was impressive considering how many areas that could have had weak paint applications. It’s only partially a shame the figure didn’t have half-painted eyebrows for that extra degree of authenticity.

As all Elite figures, 1-2-3 Kid can re-enact most moves you’d care about, and that’s definitely important to one of the first mainstream cruiserweight stars of his generation.

Kid has the following points of articulation: neck, shoulders, bicep, elbow, wrist, wrist hinge, waist, hip, thigh, knee, and ankle.

DSC_61321-2-3 Kid doesn’t get much by way of accessories — hardly an issue since he didn’t have a lot of ready made accessory options — but comes with a WWE tag title. The strap used was a lighter material, which gave it more of a title belt look and feel.

As a New Generation fan, I was fine plunking down the $20 for him, but if you’re on the fence, you might want to consider holding out for the eventual sale. Toys R Us seems to be the top spot to find Elite 41, but I’m sure they’ll start popping up at Target and Walmart eventually. DSC_6149

  1. other then his face looking like he is sucking on a lemon. cool to see the 123 kid get the plastic treament given that its been years and years since sean witman used that gimmick

  2. This figure is so bad with that face. I feel Mattel has awful facial likeness’s. Toybiz and Jakks did it much better. I cannot figure out why facial scanning technology went backwards instead of towards the future and even more detailed?

Kid to me is about a 7. Everything in the Elites rest on paint and face and accessories. I have given up on double jointed elbows and ball disc head joints. The kid face sculpt is one of the worse ever seen on any wrestling figure. Terrible!

Looking at Razor’s Edge of the Kidd; Mattel needs extra hands. It just looks awful doing that Razor’s edge as he cannot hold the Kidd up properly.

  3. Thanks Decky. That headsculpt really baffles me as well. It’s the only problem with the figure, which is why it was such a puzzling decision.

  4. Great photos. The figure is better in hand, but I still don’t fully understand what they were going for with the head-scan. Overall, Elite 41 was a great wave.
