If you’ve ever watched the original Space Battleship Yamato, then you know that the AU-09 Analyzer is a really awful robot. At least he starts out as a pervy robot sexually harassing Yuki Mori. Yes, hijinks ensue and eventually it all works out as the robot must accept there will be no romance between him and Yuki. This didn’t play out on the American version, Star Blazers.
Bandai’s model kit of Analyzer came out in 2015. I bought this kit from HLJ’s booth at SDCC 2015, but I put the review on hold. The main reason? There was nothing to display it with. This was a one-off kit/toy from an incredible anime, but he’s kinda of lost without the rest of the crew. He could be a great robot for Marvel Legends or Star Wars, but it just didn’t seem right. Until Tag Hobby posted pictures of a possible S.H. Figures Yuki Mori. And I knew the time was right. So right.
The model kit is pretty easy to build, takes an hour or two, and for the most part everything fits together. The only issues that I’ve found are the arms pop off too easily, as do the legs at the thigh swivel. The head also pops off easily, but I think that is because the kit is meant to be fitted with the Gunplay LED Unit, which comes in green and red. Other than that, the model is a lot of fun to play with and can make for some fun Instagram photography.
There are number of joints on the figure that make it a fun figure to pose. There are no ankle rockers, so I do wish the figure had come with some. It would have added a bit of pop to the posing. Except for the shoulders and the thigh swivels, all the joints are pretty solid.
The figure comes with extra hands (open hands or fists), a base that can be configured in multiple ways, and some “jets” for space travel. These are pretty cool — you get that “gravity” feel to the model as it adjusts its trajectory through space. The base is really the hit, especially if you pose against a black background. This base just melts away into the backdrop.
There are stickers, well, like one, that I haven’t put on. The figure does need paint, more for the details than the overall figure. You could hit it with a sealer and then detail paint and decal. You’ll want to pull out the clear plastic parts before sealing; it might matte the clear parts.
This is a fun kit, but with S.H. Figuarts on the horizon, there might be a chance that this kit gets made into a Chogokin or S.H. Figuart. If you are interested in this figure for other lines then, it is absolutely worth it. You can pick it up today at:
