Masters of the Universe Classics Feature – Modulok

Modulok_01Modulok was the quarterly oversized figure for the Club Eternia Subscription this year and gets us one step closer to a complete Evil Horde in Masters of the Universe Classics.  Modulok has never been on the top of my want list, but the 4 Horsemen did impressive work with this evil creature.  Let’s take a closer look!

Modulok_02Modulok™ Bio
Real Name: Galen Nycoff

An evil scientist from the Tri-Solar system, Galen Nycoff was incarcerated in Prison Starr for scientific crimes against the galaxy. While awaiting execution, he constructed a device which allowed him to divide his body into pieces, with each part endowed with his own evil consciousness. Slipping out of prison in a series of crates, he was delivered to Horde World where he reassembled himself finding he could now mix and match his parts in a thousand different ways. His skills were observed by Horde leaders and Nycoff became chief technician for Commander Kur, traveling with him to Eternia® on their quest to vanquish He-Ro®. Nycoff was banished along with the rest of the invading Horde army to Despondos™, serving his leader with his evil inventions.

Modulok_03Modulok is interesting to me as a creature who grows, or maybe attaches, extra limbs and parts to himself somehow organically.  I don’t know why I have no problem with cybernetically adding extra limbs, but the fact that these somehow attach as hunks of flesh grosses me out.  In the bio it seems like all his parts were originally part of him and split up, but the visuals tell a different story with their disparate designs, like he incorporated pieces of other creatures into himself using his weird powers.

Modulok_04Before Modulok was announced, I suggested that perhaps he did not need to be fully transformable like the original toy, rather he just needed to make a couple key looks.  I’ve never been so glad that Mattel does not listen to me.

Modulok_05This figure is great fun to play with, making different configurations by moving the different parts around.  The only nitpicks that I do have is that the torso doesn’t come apart at the waist, so it limits the customization a bit.

Modulok_06I also wouldn’t have minded to see some extra pieces that weren’t in the original figure.

Modulok_07The pieces snap together tightly and all of the limbs have the standard MOTUC articulation.  The engineering is really good on this figure for the most part.

The legs even have more articulation than the usual MOTUC figure with the swivel/hinged knees and the really well-done rocker ankles.

Modulok_17I think my favorite configuration is the six-legged, four-armed version you see above.  He’s perfectly monstrous.

Modulok_18 Modulok_19The two-legged configuration isn’t perfect as the legs aren’t countersunk into the hips like you would usually expect.

Modulok_20 Modulok_21He doesn’t look quite right standing up straight, but he looks pretty good crouching.

Modulok_22 Modulok_23The sculpt on this guy is fantastic with tons of great detail texture on all the different surfaces on the body.

Modulok_24 Modulok_25The only thing I would have liked to have seen added is perhaps a purple armor piece that was removable so we could get a little closer to the Filmation Modulok.
