I like my Fortnite characters on the weird side, so I’m glad to see that Hasbro will keep making figures from the wackier end of the character design spectrum with their Victory Royale Series. Let’s take a look the living Slurp Juice monster, Rippley!
The box has some pretty eye-catching graphics and teeny little window where you can check out the eyes on the figure to make sure the paint was applied correctly. The accessories were again wrapped in tissue paper, so keep an eye out for that when you open these figures.
Rippley comes with a pack, a shotgun, and a hammer. The pack pegs into the back with a fairly long peg and it stays on there well, though I did knock it off a lot when trying to pose Rippley. I really like the details on the black plastic pieces and the use of translucent blue on the ooze container.
The rifle is a fairly simple but solidly detailed weapon cast in translucent blue plastic with some painted black details. It fits in either hand, though I found the left hand had a perfect grip for it. The mallet is also translucent blue and fairly simple and fits well in either hand. The head of the mallet is a couple pieces, so you can see the inner details. I think this would have looked nicer if it had been one solid piece of PVC.
Sculpting is also really nice here with a well-detailed tactical outfit with neat patches and straps and that sort of thing. I also really like the way they translated the weird, flubbery texture of this guy into plastic. He’s buff and big, but I get the feeling that he’s not quite solid from the sculpting. The head is on a translucent blue peg and articulates underneath a translucent plastic hood, so you get the effect that the head blob is floating, but you can also move it around a bit in there for posing.
The articulation is good on this figure, but not quite as nice as Lynx, but it is understandable somewhat due to the thicker nature of the design. I really like that he has up/down wrist hinges because that works way better for shotgun holding poses and the butterfly hinges help get those bulky arms across the bulky torso for a two-handed grip. The elbows have great range of motion and the knees get a little more than a 90 degree bend. The hips are somewhat hindered by the belt design that attaches to panels on the thighs that are strapped to the legs. The crunch range is also not great and the shoulder straps are hard plastic and can interfere with shoulder movement. Rippley has:
- Swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, hips, and ankles
- Ball and socket waist and head.
- Butterfly pec and mid-torso hinges
- Double hinged knees and elbows
- Thigh, bicep, and boot swivels
Paint is really solid and clean and the only suggestion I would make would be perhaps darkening the smile on the head blob a bit so it reads more clearly through the outer hood blob. I think he scales well with the Jazwares Fortnite figures, Marvel Legends, and G.I. Joe Classified and he adds a nice variety to scale and body type in this first wave of Victory Royale figures. I could definitely see Rippley working with Marvel figures as an antagonist to Spidey.
Overall, I’d say Rippley is another solid figure from this debut wave.
Figure/parts swaps will be a nightmare on these
He looks great, if he goes on clearance I might have to pick one up, despite my lack of Fortnite knowledge!
I’m really not sold on the box design though. I’m very environmentally conscious, but that just looks like a nightmare for a lot of reasons. I’m concerned about not being able to see missing accessories, which also seem like they could very easily fall out that window. Plus checking for paint apps is going to be difficult. I wish we could get just a piece of plastic covering the front window, but without the huge bulky tray.
I’ll have to get one in hand to get a better idea, maybe it won’t seem so bad. I remember seeing mock-ups for Black Series boxes like this, and Legends is loooong overdue for a packaging redesign. I imagine we’ll be getting something like this soon.
If you look at the very first packaging pic, the close up of the window, you can see there is a piece of plastic on it (can even see the PET recycle symbol), so nothing will fall out of it.
