{mosimage}To wrap up the Top Ten Madness, we’re onto our final installment – the Marvel Top Ten. Fwooshers came out in droves – just a few voters shy of our last Top Ten – despite a very vocal contingent in The Negative Zone saying that Hasbro isn’t cutting the mustard. Say what you will about Hasbro’s product quality – you can’t knock them for character selection. For this fall’s Marvel Top Ten, we only had five of eleven (due to the tie for 10th place) characters making the Top Ten again this time around. Most of the rest have either been announced or heavily rumored. That means we’ve got six (again, due to a tie for 10th) new characters making their presence felt. But not enough to displace our new number one… |
Always a bridesmaid, never a bride – no more! Polaris had been firmly stuck in our #3 slot for the past two Top Tens, but with Black Bolt and Nova upcoming in future Marvel Legends assortments, it was time for this mistress of magnetism to stake her claim on the top spot. It’s probably helped that she’s bounced back from her stint as Pestilence under Apocalypse and is now kicking ass out in space as part of the ragtag crew of Starjammers, with none other than the man who left her stranded at the altar, Havok. |
Warlock’s been hanging out in the bottom half of the Top Ten for the past 3 votes, and now he’s jumped up five spots to take #2. Artificially created to be the perfect human, we look forward to seeing him incarnated in plastic form. While he’s had a number of costumes, including a sporty new black ensemble in Annihilation Conquest, most folks want to see him in his classic look. And if we get a Warlock, how far behind are Pip the Troll (no votes) and Gamora (#204)? |
Sure, we just got a Jean Grey in her Marvel Girl costume as part of the recent exclusive two-packs that hit Wal-Mart – but Fwooshers still have a strong desire for the mutant who just won’t stay dead. It isn’t a mystery which of her many costumes people want. We’re just one Jim Lee costume from completing the Gold team from his short but beloved run on X-Men. Hasbro may think it’s too soon for another Jean Grey, with the Marvel Girl and movie Jeans still on the pegs, but we’ll keep voting for her until she gets made. |
Gladiator moves to our fourth spot from #7 last time. We’ve wanted him ever since we got X-Men’s Colossus way back in ML series 5. As leader of the Shi’ar Imperial Guard, this powerhouse has also fought the Fantastic Four, Thor, the Hulk, Ronan the Accuser, and the Skrulls – so there’s plenty of plastic combatants that deserve his company. People claim that the Sentry is Marvel’s Superman, but it’s really this guy – just with purple skin and a kick-ass mohawk. |
Breaking into the Top Ten at number 5 is Terrax the Tamer, up from #13 last time. The former herald of Galactus may have been stripped of the power cosmic, but under Dr. Doom’s evil machinations has regained some of his former glory. Now that we’ve got an updated and kick-ass Silver Surfer, we need a baddie that can stand up to him. Terrax is that guy. Maybe with his continued participation in Annihilation, Hasbro will see that Terrax would make an awesome addition to the Fantastic Four collections that we’ve all got. |
The Crimson Dynamo is another of the new guys to make it into the Top Ten in our 6th spot, up from #14 last time. We haven’t seen an Iron Man in Marvel Legends since Ultimate Iron Man in Hasbro’s first series, and with the Iron Man movie coming out next year, maybe Hasbro’s holding some back – so what better way to fill out a Marvel Legends line-up than with an Iron Man villain, who just happens to have some killer armor of his own? The biggest question is which version of Crimson Dynamo to do? There’ve been a bunch of guys to claim the name, and they’ve each had different armor. Perhaps this is something for a future Make My Marvel! article… |
The lady with the hair that made the 80’s jealous was our biggest mover and shaker this go around. Medusa moved up to the 7th spot all the way from #24 last time. We can attribute this to the "Black Bolt effect" – since Black Bolt, last Top Ten’s #1, got announced and shown at the San Diego Comic Con this year, all of the Inhumans rode the wave higher. None rode it higher than Medusa, who serves as Black Bolt’s interpreter in the Inhuman’s royal family. Medusa also rides the Black Bolt wave as his wife, which isn’t as bad a joke as her also being his cousin. This is the Blue Area of the Moon, not Arkansas! (Booyah, Robokillah!) |
![]() Dormammu, tied at number eight with Guardian, is the extra-dimensional mystical entity that happens to be Dr. Strange’s arch-enemy. He was also a big mover and shaker this go-around, jumping up from #21 last Top Ten. If we’re to judge from the number of Human Torches we’ve seen in the past couple of years, kids like action figures whose heads are on fire – and Dormammu brings that to the game. It helps that on top of his brain-power and magical energies, he’s got the hand-to-hand skills that could pit him against bruisers like the Hulk. |
Our other #8 holder, Guardian, jumped up from #20 last go-around. I’m not sure if the boost in his popularity is coming from his recent appearance in Omega Flight – where the Guardian suit is filled by Michael Pointer, the former misunderstood villain known as the Collective, who also just happened to kill off most of Alpha Flight. (Yes, that hurt just typing it out.) It’s more likely that the jump is coming from seeing Northstar and Aurora prototypes in the recent fan poll held by Wizard . Appealing to Hasbro for a Guardian isn’t a hard sell, since one of the guys running the show is a self-proclaimed Alpha Fan. So get to it – Sasquatch would sure like some buddies to play with! |
Jubilee was tied for tenth last time, and despite all the spots vacated at the top of the poll, just managed to hang on to tenth again. Fans of the 80’s animated X-Men series see Jubes as one of the last characters yet to be made in 6-inch plastic. She lost her mutant powers after the Scarlet Witch uttered her now classic phrase "No more mutants" at the end of House of M, but that hasn’t stopped Jubilee from bouncing back, figuratively and literally, as part of the new New Warriors. That was a poor attempt at a joke about her new physical assets, but if you didn’t get that, then all you really need to know is that her new codename is Wond(erb)ra. |
Yes, we got a Bucky Barnes in the third assortment of Hasbro’s Marvel Legends, but that didn’t stop us from demanding the Winter Soldier. He was tied with Medusa at #24 last time, and had enough staying power to just make it by the skin of his teeth into the last spot in the Top Ten. It doesn’t hurt that the killer formerly known as Bucky is kicking all sorts of ass in Ed Brubaker’s Captain America comic, and is the odds-on favorite to replace the dearly departed Steve Rogers. If that does take place, I’d wager that folks would still rather see him in his Winter Soldier garb than in the new Alex Ross-designed Cap costume. |
![]() We were really getting tired of writing about Fin Fang Foom, and with triple F heavily rumored to be coming as the BAF in a Hulk-based lineup with movie support next year, the top spot opened up for this lovable teleporting giant Inhuman bulldog. Say that 10 times real fast. Like Medusa, Lockjaw was a beneficiary of the "Black Bolt Effect," skipping past front-runners Nimrod and Titanium Man to claim the top spot. Not only would a Lockjaw BAF fit in with Black Bolt and Medusa (when they make her), this pooch has also recently been a Thing’s best friend, in the too-shortly-lived series from Dan Slott. |
We’ll round out this Top Ten write-up by looking at where the rest of the winners from last spring’s Top Ten ended up.
- Black Bolt (#1) – coming in HML4
- Nova (#2) – coming in HML4
- Sunfire (#5) – AOA version showed up in the Wizard fan poll
- Tigra (#6) – coming in HML4
- Valkyrie (#9) – rumored to be in the rumored Hulk line
- Dazzler (#10) – fell to #14 – apparently heavy exposure in New Excalibur isn’t helping – thank you, Chris Claremont!
- Fin Fang Foom (BAF #1) – rumored to be the BAF in the rumored Hulk line
Well, that wraps it up for this edition of the Marvel Top Ten, as well as the Top Ten Madness that included our first Top Ten for Legendary Comic Book Heroes and our second edition of the DC Top Ten. We’ll be sharing the results with Hasbro – and will look forward to knocking off a few more of these between now and our next Top Ten!
