We’ve had both a modern and an X-factor version of Havok, but this time the classic gets the limelight. Well, mostly classic. If you want to be strict about it, he’s missing a little something to be purely classic, but more on that later.
Havok’s initial costume is as simple as it gets. It’s just a black uniform with a crazy helmet deal that somehow works for him. The modern Havok kept those three arcing decorations in spirit, but brought them in so they were more flush to his head. But to get that true classic flavor they have to be sweeping up and around, triple-rainbowing around his head in all their head-scratching glory.
Havok is on what is usually called the Sunfire body. It’s probably one of my favorite bodies, because it’s well articulated and has excellent butterfly joints. I know there have been criticisms that the shoulders on this body sit a little too low, but it doesn’t bother me, and if the trade off is the expressive range of motion afforded by the butterfly joints, then it’s worth it.
Being just a paintjob and a new head on a basic body, Havok’s simplicity is the budget-saver of the wave. Which is perfectly fine, because there are tons of characters like this, and a classic Havok was quite due to be made. It’s been a long time since that Toybiz figure.
One major issue that has popped up ever since the figure was first shown off is the lack of his neckpiece, either as a paint detail or in some kind of sculpted add-on. It’s a strange omission, but it does make this figure line up with the Marvel Puzzle Quest version of him. What the hell is the Marvel Puzzle Quest version of him? I have no idea, but I found it on google image search, so…it’s a thing. It’s a thing I am not doing any research on, but it’s an image of him without that neckpiece, so…yay? I don’t know.
It’s an omission to be sure, but outside of that, the figure is well done. And I’m going to do something I don’t usually do, which is to praise his power-effect pieces.
In lieu of reusing those extremely overused swirly bubble effects, Havok got brand new power effect pieces to show off his usual circular power emanations. And I have to say I like them quite a bit. I’ve said before that I’ve never really needed effect pieces for my toys for the most part, but these are actually very well done, different and look great on him. I like the large piece that connects to his back the most, but the two arm-pieces aren’t too shabby either. It takes a bit of fiddling to get them to stay in place the way you want them, but once you do the effect is quite comic-booky. If I was the type of collector to have a display, I’d probably actually leave these on him, because these might be some of the most well-done and natural effect pieces in the line so far.
Havok is the epitome of simple but necessary, and outside of the missing neck component, this is a well-done figure.

This classic Neal Adams design is one of my favorites. I wish it had the neck rings, but I still love the way this figure turned out. A must have for me.
I know, right? Just happened to be checking the pulse site for an order update and there it was! I thought for $27 we would have at least gotten a couple heads to swap out like on the old original 5” figure. Came with cyclops and Wolverine heads, I think.
Animated Series Morph is up for preorder at Hasbro Pulse. I’m surprised this isn’t on the front page.
I’m very, very happy to see Hasbro doing newly sculpted, character-specific energy effects. The hand pieces are even two different sculpts! These are the main selling point for me for this figure, since X-Factor is my preferred Havok. And for that reason, I’d love to see these effects in yellow.
Now we desperately need newly sculpted telepathic and telekinetic effects.
