Funko Magic Mornings continues today with a closer look at the Sorceress Liliana Vess! Liliana is a Necromancer that has made deals with demons and devils to keep herself alive for an unnaturally long time. The design fits my idea of an evil sorceress perfectly with a wicked stare, strange tattoos, and a slinky revealing outfit.
The sculpt is very nice here and the tattoos appear to be etched into the bare skin sections of the figure with paint detail completing the look.
The etched lines and painted lines match up very nicely, completing a solid tattoo look that could have turned out horribly wrong. The armor and dress are detailed and textured well to feel like different materials.
I think the hands are slightly larger than I would prefer, but I think that works to emphasize her main ability as a spell caster, and they are positioned well for spell casting and gesturing.
The physique is shapely, but not ridiculously so and the articulation is integrated well.
Liliana comes with no accessories, which is a little strange, but I’m not sure what you would include with her. I suppose a spell casting effect would have been nice.
Liliana has articulation similar to the 6-inch Star Wars Black figures or the Funko Legacy Game of Thrones figures with:
- Ball-and-socket head, neck, upper torso, and ankles
- Swivel hinged hips, wrists, and shoulders
- Swivel thighs and biceps
- Single-hinged elbows
- Double-hinged knees
The ankles are interesting as I don’t recall seeing ball-and-socket ankles outside of import figures. It’s basically a double barbell with the ball inserted into the ankle and the foot.
It allows for some decent rocker and flexing movement.
Liliana’s outfit is potentially problematic for articulation with her giant shawl on her shoulder and long skirt, but the pliability of both allows for good range of motion.
The paint on Liliana is good. She also has the semi-translucent plastic used for her skin tone, and it’s a nice look, though a bit shiny in spots.
As mentioned before, the tattoo application is very good and the armor is a cool, shiny metallic purple.
Thanks to Funko for sending this figure along for review.
Be sure to check back tomorrow for more Magic goodness.
As a recovering M:tG player, I’m glad the first action figures inspired by the game have turned out so well. Garruk is a definite buy for me (since I focused on Green when I played), but damned if the rest don’t look nice as well.
It’s a long shot, but hopefully good sales will lead to figures of non-Planeswalker characters. I’d love Akroma, Phage, Khamal, some Kamigawa ninjas, wicked looking Phyrexians, and Ravnica guild leaders!
This could make a cool Karnilla Queen of the Norns custom. Shame about the etched in tatoos although makes sense for the toy itself.
No clear plastic pegs or breakage on mine so far…
The awe-inspiring photographic quality of these overviews is somewhat soured by the stale video game trailer cliché of subsequently introduced characters/factions defeating/killing the previous one.
Great pics! Is Funko still using the clear plastic pegs for joints like they did with their GoT figures? I love the look of their Magic line and would love to pick up a set, but after several broken Neds, a broken Jon, a broken Hound, and a broken Walker, I’m really hesitant to continue to give them business.
