Mattel’s Ghostbusters II Toys R Us Giftset

The boys in gray are ready to slug it out with a pretty pesky poltergeist

“We’re back!” Ray Stantz gleefully exclaims to herald the return of the Ghostbusters after they snuff out the Scolari Brothers. Well, even as the package boasts the same, Mattel has broken their Ghostbusters property into mass retail at Toys R Us with this GB2-themed four pack, which is currently hitting. In one fell swoop you can get your fix for the four boys in gray as they are briefly portrayed in the movie.

The boys in gray are ready to slug it out with a pretty pesky poltergeist

As you already know (I am sure) this sets features Egon, Peter, Winston and Ray in the dark gray outfits with the “GB2” shoulder logo that they briefly wore (mostly in montages) in the second film. They also added some removable soft goods Santa hats to give this special set a bit more of a holiday feel (also movie accurate). From a construction standpoint, these guys are mostly the same as their first movie incarnations that have been, or in the case of Peter, will be available on Matty Collector.

In case you could not tell, this set is from Ghostbusters 2
I think its one of the Fettuccine's

However, for those wide-eyed completists out there, or those that just want an easy-peasy way to acquire the gang at one time, this set is actually a pretty great get, especially with the current sales/coupons/price reductions going on at TRU. It should run you in the $40-$50 range. Like I said, they are constructed mostly from the standard existing base body, but with some slight changes that make them pretty unique.

My parents didn't believe in toys

The dark gray color actually works really well for me. I am finding that I like these variations a lot more than I originally thought I would. I will always have my tan versions to be the centerpieces of my display, but hopefully we will be able to build a nice “part 2” corner as well. The main changes in the figures themselves are, of course, the paint scheme, as well as the new “2” logos and their gloves have been replaced by the yellow thingees on their belts. Are those walkie talkies? I dunno, but they did wear them in the second flick so, right on.

Suck in the guts, guys - we're the Ghostbusters

Each of the individual figures do have some other minor changes from their movie one counterparts. Their name tags do have the different “font” to them and their skin tones are slightly darker than before. I know a lot of pictures have shown them to be REALLY dark, but I think that has a bit to do with the photography. Yes, they are darker, but when they are not standing right next to the older versions, it does not look out of place or even “tanned” to me.

Bizarro 'busters!

Past that, Egon features silver rims to his glasses, Winston is sans mustache, Pete is not wearing his gloves and has a clear (rather than the yellow) leg tube and Ray, well, I think Ray is actually the closest to the other version.

The set also includes the aforementioned Santa hats as well as the Slimer figure that we have seen a few times, but again, for those that have not ventured into the GB figures, he is essential. Everything comes housed in a black and sliver box with a brief bio of each character featured on the back. I do have to say, that if I have one major crit with this set, it is the packaging. Usually Mattel does a knockout job with packaging, but this one is pretty plain and leaves me cold.

We need a Vigo figure so we don't have to just shoot a facsimile of a painting

So there they are, like I said, this set is going to appeal to the hardcore GB fans as well as those that want the whole gang at once, or even those that stumble upon the set learning about them for the first time. Pretty well-rounded appeal factor. Now, Matty, bubby, where is that Vigo the Carpathian that all of the kids have been asking for? Make it so!

*Thanks again for reading and thanks to the Ghost busting gang at Mattel for sending this to us! We have one more First Looking coming atcha’!
