Bandai: S.H. Figuarts Avengers: Infinity War Captain America and Iron Spider Review

This is a twofer! The latest and greatest S.H. Figuarts have arrived from Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War movie line, Captain America and Iron Spider. And they are tons of fun.

There’s been a lot of pictures online of Captain America, and many of those pictures are accompanied by a tons of complaints about the face scanning tech. I’m not seeing it. It looks like the same exact face as the previous Captain America: Civil War S.H. Figuarts release. Infinity War Cap has longer slicked back hair and a beard but it looks the same. What doesn’t look the same is the paint. The skin tones are way off. Infinity War Cap is sporting the yellow tinted skin whereas Civil War Cap has a really nice flesh tone. The paint makes a huge difference.

But none of these figures looks 100% like Chris Evans. But then again, outside of Hot Toys none of the 6 inch action figures have hit the mark. I’m starting to think he’s the Han Solo/Harrison Ford of the line. Never quite right.

Infinity War Cap is otherwise almost perfect. I have all the S.H. Figuarts and figma versions of movie Cap and Infinity War Cap is almost the best. Everything on this figure basically kills all the previous releases. It looks like a human being in the build and not some anime version. The sculpting detail is amazing and the paint is beautiful. I really really love this iteration.

I did mention that it wasn’t 100% right and that’s because this figure suffer from the same drumstick syndrome that Star-Lord suffers. Thin at the knees and then wide at the upper thigh, like a drumstick. I know that this does reflect human anatomy, but the way it’s sculpted it really stands out. I’m wondering if Bandai can’t tweak that just a bit more. It’s a huge improvement over the cylinder legs on Avengers and Civil War Cap, but when compared to the Marvel Legends version, I prefer the ML legs. Bandai is on the way there, just needs a little more work.

Iron Spider floored me a bit. I thought this was just a repaint with some reworking of the sculpt, but I was wrong. This is an all new sculpt! Yes it is based on the engineering of the original Spider-Man: Homecoming version but all the details are new. What threw me even more is that Iron Spider is shorter than Homecoming Spider, and that’s a shocker. It’s not the shorter neck but all around he’s just a bit shorter, it’s not like there was a mistake in production. Which makes it weird posing them together since Homecoming that came first is taller than Infinity War coming second…

I love the Homecoming Spider quite a bit. For me it’s one of the best S.H. Figuarts figures. Looks good, poses well and is hand candy. Iron Spider follows in those footsteps. It’s a beautifully sculpted figure, tons of details and is pure jy to pose. Plus it is more solid. Not that Homecoming was super loose but it’s just a bit tighter all around.

The only issue I’ve had with Iron Spider is the head. The ability to switch the eyes out resulted in a very loose fit of the head on the neck. It’s a bit shocking the first time the head rolls off into your hand just touching it.

Accessories, let’s touch on them. Iron Spider has his Spider-Legs and they are fun! Bandai nailed these, like really nailed them. Good strong joints and tons of funs. He also comes with the usual array of hands and clear web shots. He does have extra eye sets and for all those out there asking the question, yes you can swap the Iron Spider eyes onto Homecoming and vice versa. Finally you can have white pupils and not silver on Homecoming Spider.

Cap on the other hand, comes with some hands, and a spear. A spear he uses for 30 seconds. Not his heater shields or, even for shits and giggles, his round shield. I don’t get the logic here. Maybe it was due to early production art or there will be a Bluefin release. No idea to be honest, but it’s kinda a shame, I really wanted the shields.

Before final assessment, I would like to point this out. Infinity War Cap can easily be converted to Civil War Cap. You can swap the heads. I think you can swap the forearms, Infinity War’s come right off, Civil War might take some teasing. You cannot swap at the shoulder, the pegs from shoulder to chest are different lengths. You will have to figure out a solution for the star, but I am certain that someone out there will make castings of a star that will fit perfectly.

I think you’ve figured it out. I love these figures. Flaws and all. Amazing figures and of course Bandai continues to deliver amazing pieces of plastic hand candy. Thank you!
