Bandai: S.H. Figuarts Dragon Ball Z Son Gohan

I like Son Gohan,.During Dragon Ball Z, he was one of the characters that had great development, and when it ended I thought he would be the one in the spotlight. A number of episodes into Dragon Ball Super and what happened?!?! Let’s go back to when Gohan became kick-ass.

Son Gohan is the first-born child of Goku and Chi-Chi. He’s a half Saiyan and half Earthling and is mentored by Piccolo. He’s a primary character developed from child to adult during the Dragon Ball Z series, and he is one of my favorite characters, probably because he’s had just as much development as Goku. My youngest son and I are deep into Dragon Ball Super, and I gotta admit, Gohan ain’t getting a lot of love. Granted, we just finished the “Gohan Black” arc, but, yeah, not much love.

The costume shown on this figure matches the colors from the Cell Saga worn at the Cell Games. It’s important to note as he wears a costume similar to Piccolo’s during DBZ most of the time. At a younger age, he wore a similar costume with red belt and writs bands.

The figure is the battle-damaged version of when Gohan goes full Super Sayain and starts kicking ass left and right. Bandai did release a non-battle-damaged version earlier, using the old style body, the key differences being the knee joint design, hip design, and an upper ab joint. In addition, the head sculpts on the new releases are much better. The sculpt is spot-on to the character, and if you have battle damaged Goku (which I don’t), they look great paired together (google it).

The articulation is a bit different from the previous release. The new knee joints have a more traditional S.H. Figuarts design, where the previous knee joint was jointed stick. The new hip joints work beautifully, I was dubious of them at first, but after posing this guy next to my Goku and Piccolo, these hips are way more stable. The new ab joint is okay, but it doesn’t work great on this figure.

Banai knows how to pack in the accessories. Gohan comes with two heads, tons of faces, and hands. The heads are really the hit, one has the Super Sayain hair and the other has the golden power-upped normal hair. Paint the latter black and you have normal Gohan.

I’m happy that my youngest son has taken an interest in Dragon Ball, it gives me a chance to re-explore a wonderful universe and to share a hobby with him. Bandai’s Dragon Ball figures are a ton of fun and the recent updates to the designs and articulation are worth the purchases. I do like this figure, both character- and story-wise. He’s a good pickup for any DBZ collector. You can get him today here:
