Comic Doctor Strange vs. Movie Astral Doctor Strange! It’s a fight of the variants. Like, straight-up variants.
When I got these figures and chose to review them I was basically going to write, like, a line and say look, same as before. And with the Movie Astral Doctor Strange, that certainly is the case: the same exact figure as the regular Movie Doctor Strange minus the cape (review and review) and molded in a milky clear white-pinkish plastic. As mentioned, we reviewed the figure twice, and I don’t have much to say about it that hasn’t been said: not other angle, insight, or input.
I was going to write the exact same thing about the comic Doctor Strange. When I realized that this figure is different than the one released in the Hulkbuster (review) wave. Yeah a slight difference in that Dormammu Series Strange comes with a cape, which sucks. Yeah, I hate this cape, it feels cheap, sits like crap on his shoulders, and it’s hard. Not soft, not bendy. It feels like an afterthought. And then to stick it on a reissue? Weeellll …
Hasbro got all sneaky on us, they threw a cape on this figure leading us to believe that it was just a reissue, but it is in fact a variant. The first difference is the paint on the chest: don’t ask me which costume version is which, but Dormammu Series Strange has a different “Red” pattern than Hulkbuster Series Strange. The other difference is the forearms. Hulkbuster Strange has the patterned gloves up to the elbow while Dormammu Strange has painted gloves, no sculpted pattern. I know this doesn’t seem like much but it is a huge difference. To me.
As mentioned, with reissues and variants it’s always difficult and challenging to say something new that hasn’t already been said in previous reviews. So I’ll talk about the movie … wait … nevermind … jedd already covered that; read the review here.
Basically these are good figures to add to your collection. Astral Doctor Strange figures are always fun to have since the good doctor spends a lot time traveling and fighting in his Astral form. The Comic Strange is a good figure if you are looking for a slightly different costume and a cape. You can pick these up here:
