Wave 2 of the Rogue Black Series figures have started hitting Walmarts, Targets, and online stores, and I was lucky enough to grab a set of the new characters (Krennic, C-3PO and the Scarif Stormtrooper) from Fwoosh sponsor BigBadToyStore last week. Let’s take a look at the diabolical Director Krennic!
I know a lot of hype about Rogue One has surrounded the return of Darth Vader, but personally I’m a lot more interested in all of the new characters, including Director Orson Krennic. The nice thing about new characters in a prequel era is you don’t know how their story ends, so there is suspense that most prequels are missing.
Krennic has a great design, featuring a version of the standard Imperial officer uniform in bright white. The white design was seen in the original trilogy, specifically A New Hope showed a few officers wearing the white togs.
The old extended universe stated that those particular white uniforms belonged to Imperial Intelligence officers, but Krennic seems to be the head of advanced weapons research, so I’m not sure what the white uniform means in-canon anymore. That doesn’t really matter for my enjoyment of the film, but the stark white makes for a nice contrast with his Death Troopers and Darth Vader.
Krennic sports a pretty sharp sculpt and seems to match the pics I’ve seen of him online really well. The likeness is really great and I like the plastic they used for the skin tone as it has a matte finish and holds details well.
He comes with a gun and a removable cape. The gun is a little soft, but holds the details well enough. It could probably use a metallic paint job or wash. It fits nicely into the holster attached to the skirt.
The skirt piece and belt are all one piece of flexible plastic that allows for some pretty decent leg movement. The holster is part of the skirt, so customizers might want to bear that in mind if they are looking to create officers who don’t wear holsters all the time.
The cape is a fairly stiff plastic shell and just sort of hangs on the shoulders. It looks pretty good when standing still, but if you move the arms much at all, it can look a little off.
It has a texture to it that captures the particular feeling of the material of Krennic’s cloak.
The articulation is as follows:
- Swivel/hinge neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, and ankles
- Ball-and-socket neck and mid torso
- Double-hinged knees
- Swivel hips
Check out Robo’s video review for an articulation breakdown:
The head has really nice movement, but the trade off for that is you can see some gaps in the neck depending on the pose.
The paint is limited to details like the boots, belt, glove, rank badge, eyes, eyebrows and hair. The figure is mostly cast in the final plastic color. It looks pretty good for the most part, though the legs are a little shiny.
The hair is a uniform gray and the actor is more of a salt and pepper gray hair in the trailers, so it’s not an exact match. I prefer that they go this route than the brown they used for TFA Han Solo, but think it could use a wash. The eye paints are actually on-target and don’t mess up the face too much, so I’m calling that a win.
Overall I think Krennic came out pretty great. The figure looks to match the look of the character in everything I’ve seen so far and just looks darn cool on the shelf flanked by a few Death Troopers. I’m hoping to grab another at some point to make a Grand Admiral Thrawn custom.
