“Spider-Bitch,” as she’s been named, or “Spider-Woman” or “Spider-Girl” or “Kingpin” or “Ashley Barton” is one of the latest action figures from Hasbro’s Marvel Legends line. Barton’s an alternate-reality Spider-Verse character that’s managed to make it through some crossovers and appears regularly in the current Marvel Universe.
The character has her origins in Wolverine, specifically the “Old Man Logan” story arc from a number of years ago (2008). She’s recently appeared in Dan Slott’s Spider-Verse story arc in Spider-Man. She’s a great character, the daughter of Hawkeye in a Universe controlled by villains. She’s taken the head and mantle of Kingpin in her territory and is recruited by Superior Spider-Man to do some killing in the Spider-Verse Wars.
This action figure represents a first for Hasbro in a while. This is a new female buck that Hasbro will be employing quite a bit. In fact, they used it again in this wave on Silk, with some differences. Compared to the Moonstone buck, this figure is a little more slender, still athletic, but without the muscle mass on Moonstone. The slender built is closer to the Storm buck, but with narrower hips. The thighs and hips look new as well. The arms and possibly the chest are reuse. The chest on Barton is different than Silk in that Barton’s has the painted-on costume rather than cloth lying over a naked body. It’s a great new buck and one that looks to get a lot of use. ‘Specially by customizers, Psylocke, anyone?
The articulation is standard; there is nothing new in the scheme. The head does employ the hinge and ball-and-socket joints, allowing for a great range of movement. The ab-joint has a great range of motion going backwards, but it is limited in its forward movement. The rest of the articulation is standard and known. Note: there are no loose joints and no stuck joints here.
There aren’t a lot of accessories with this figure, just the Build-A-Figure (BAF) piece. I feel like that this is a huge let down as she could benefit from a maskless head and extra hands, but for some reason Hasbro is reluctant to include extra hands with the Spider-females. I’m not certain any have gotten extra hands to date.
For those of you that love the Spider-Verse and are interested in collecting as many figures as Hasbro makes, then this is a core figure for you. It’s a great new figure a ton of fun to play with and really pops on the shelf. Anyone who customizes action figures will want to snap up these figures for the customizing value; Elektra, Psylock, Dazzler, Jessica Jones — I could name many, many more characters than can be made from this base body.
