I love Space Venom. I love Flash Thompson as Venom. I read Agent Venom and like it. And I love Space Venom in his own series and in the pages of Guardians of the Galaxy.
When Venom first appeared in the annals of The Amazing Spider-Man, I loved the idea of the Symbiote Spidey hooking up with another person, Eddie Brock, and becoming Venom. It was different, cooky, and, when done right, really disturbing. As the character developed, he become another crazed killer hellbent on killing everything, and it kind of lost it’s luster. I haven’t read every single Venom comic or outing, but I have read all the recent Agent Venom and Space Venom comics on Marvel Unlimited and I love the new direction.
Flash Thompson is offered the Venom Symbiote, heavily sedated, and becomes Agent Venom. Good storytelling ensues, until the Marvel Universe gets kinda kooky and Thompson is shipped off into outer space with the Guardians of the Galaxy. More adventuring, and they find the planet of the Symbiotes, Klyntar, Venom and the Symbiote are healed, and now he’s a Space Knight. Which is cool cause Space Knights are the greatest thing ever.
The figure is the BAF, or Build-A-Figure, in the series, and it is awesome. It’s huge, for starters. It’s a little smaller than Juggernaut but taller than Sentry. And while this figure features a unique sculpt, I can’t help but think that we could see some repurposed parts in other figures down the line. The figure is big, thick, and wide all around. The costume parts are either raised surfaces or etched lines, and I imagine that took some pretty serious engineering to get right. Luckily it was done right, making for an exciting figure to look at.
This isn’t everyone’s favorite version of Venom — we got that in the last Spider-Man series (review here), but this is still an impressive Venom figure. And if you are collecting Symbiotes, you are now up to seven: Carnage, Toxin, Superior Venom, Anti-Venom, Spider-Carnage, Venom, and Space Venom. Just as the Spider-verse is expanding, so is the Venom-Verse.
The articulation works well on this figure. The only joints that are missing are the double-jointed elbows, but, as this is a large figure, those are some difficult joints to work in. Venom has a great range of motion and even his hips allow him to get into a wide stance, wider than Pizza Spidey. With the size and bulk of the figure, I was worried about crouching poses and “Venom-like” stances, but I’ve had no issues.
This is a great figure and definitely one that you should pick up. Even if you aren’t a fan of the Thompson Venom, it’s another Symbiote that you can plug into your collection. Or if you are collecting the Guardians, then this is a great fit. Now Hasbro just needs to give us a female Symbiote.
