Power-Con 2016 wrapped last week and was a blast. A part of the fun of the con was picking up these three exclusive figures. Let’s take a quick look at these three cool exclusives!
Exclusive figures are always a pretty touchy subject in fandom. I’m of the opinion that they help get more figures out there, and even if I can’t attend, the Internet age gives me a shot at most of them. The folks behind Power-Con went out of their way to allow non-attendees to grab these, and I appreciate that effort. That said, these are the best kinds of exclusives: semi-obscure, fan-demanded repaints.
I like repaints, but I can usually live without them. And while I don’t really love repaints, these three are exceptionally well done.
Red Beast Man
Red Beast Man is probably the one I have the most nostalgia for since he was in the first few mini-comics. As a figure, it’s probably my least favorite of these three. The original MOTUC Beast Man is one of my favorite figures from the whole line, but his ankles are so loose. It’s nice to have a Beast Man with solid ankles again.
They go out of their way to use a few different reds (light, dark, and metallic) to try and add depth, and while accurate to the book, I don’t love it as a figure.
It’s just too much red. I know that sounds nuts, because that’s the whole point of this figure, but I don’t like it as much as I was thinking I would. Maybe a darker wash would have broke it up a bit more. I’m glad the figure exists, but it’s one of those things that conceptually sounds better than than the reality of it.
This is sort of the opposite situation as Red Beast Man for me because I have zero nostalgia for Camo Khan, but I love this figure.
To me, he’s just another cool Snake Man. The new colors are different enough from the original Khan that I can easily see him as his own character.
The paint is neat with some really shiny metallic gold feet, claws, and belt, as well as a crazy bright green/yellow eye paint.
It feels like the lower torso piece is more flexible here than on the original Khan.
Green Granamyr
This sculpt was a nice blend of the mini-comics and Filmation look, so getting a repaint in the original mini-comics green is much appreciated.
It works great, with the whole figure receiving a nice light green drybrush that brings out all the amazing scale detail in the original sculpt. I think this paint job highlights the sculpt better than the original paint job. I thought it was interesting that they went through the trouble of re-coloring the box art as well.
Overall, all three of these figures are nice figures, but I think Camo Khan is the only absolutely necessary figure for my collection.
