Hasbro produced quite a few 6-inch scale Black Series figures of characters from The Force Awakens ahead of the film’s release. This group includes main characters, troopers, blink-and-you-miss-them characters and even a guy who didn’t make the final cut. It looks like Hasbro is moving away from waves that focus solely on The Force Awakens for the first two waves this year, and I’m pleased about that. A quick glance at my TFA shelf gives me the impression that TFA is the most well-represented segment of Star Wars in the 6-inch scale currently. Still, after watching the movie a few times, there are a few characters I would like to add to the shelf eventually, including a couple main characters, some minor characters and some background filler.
I’m hoping Hasbro is going to get to some more demanded Original Trilogy characters like Lando and prequel guys like Dooku, but eventually they will sprinkle in more characters from The Force Awakens, so I’ve been thinking about who I want most. I’m going to go from my least wanted to most wanted here, but first a few runners up:
- Jessica Pava: She is one of the pilots at the end battle. I’ll be honest and say I’m including her just because she is a female X-wing pilot and I think that’s cool, and I’d like to build a squad with Poe and Asty.
- Resistance outfit Rey, snow gear Han Solo, General Hux indoor gear, and Unmasked Kylo Ren: I like variants in Star Wars figures, just not as much as unique characters.
- Unkar Plutt: He has a pivotal role in the movie, but I really don’t care for the design at all.
- Teedo and Luggabeast: More of a deluxe pack, but I really love the design on these two.
- Supreme Leader Snoke: Again, a pivotal role, but not my favorite design. Maybe it would be better to get this guy after we actually see him in person.
- Bazine Netal: I just like her evil harlequin look.
10. Grummgar
Often referred to online as a “fat Bossk,” his resemblance to a giant, malformed Trandoshan is probably part of the appeal to me. He appears in Disney Infinity as a non-playable character and looks great running around. I like the idea of a character this large joining the line. He could be a fun toy.
Temmin “Snap” Wexley is a resistance reconnaissance pilot who has a few lines in the movie and actually survives. He’d go great with our pilots Asty and Dameron. I also like that he’s a main character from one of the new canon of novels, Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath.
Out of all the creatures in Maz Kanata’s castle, this is the design that most appeals to me. He appears briefly in the film when Finn is trying to get a ride off the planet to run from the First Order. According to some supplementary material, Ithano also goes by the name of “Crimson Corsair” and he’s a space pirate. I just like the look and think he’d make a fun figure.
Though I would prefer his Original Trilogy look, I’d love to see Ackbar in the 6-inch scale. The Mon Cal aliens are one of my favorite Star Wars designs.
“Tasu Leech! Good to see you.” This guy looks like he would fit in perfectly at Jabba’s Palace, and I love the standoff between Han, the Guavians, and Kanjiklub. It harkens back to A New Hope with Han’s dealings with Greedo and Jabba in a fun way. I want him because he’s the leader of Kanjiklub, but I also really like the look of the actor who plays him.
Just like Tasu Leech, the mouthpiece for the Guavian Death Gang made an impression on me and my family. His line, “Tell that to Kanjiklub!” is one of the more quoted TFA lines around our house. Besides, we already have the Enforcers. He’s another one where I just dig the costume. His padded armor probably has one of the more prequel feeling designs, but I like it.
But he wasn’t in the movie at all! Yeah, true, but he looked so damn cool in his brief appearance that I immediately wanted a figure. The costume is basically an inversion of his Return of the Jedi look, and I have to think he’ll feature more prominently in the next movie looking very much the same.
Like Ackbar and the Mon Cal, I love the Sullustan design in general and Nien Nunb specifically in Return of the Jedi. That laugh! This one is a bit of a cheat because he looks almost the same in TFA as he does in ROTJ. All they need to do is add a removable helmet and he can either sit with the eventual General Calrissian figure or with Poe Dameron’s squadron.
Now, we’ve seen a ceremonial Leia figure in a recent Hasbro motion poster, but I’m looking for the “classy gas station attendant” look with the vest and sensible slacks. It very much recalls Leia’s outfit under the poncho in ROTJ and the vest makes me think of the Tantive IV defenders at the beginning of A New Hope. It’s her look throughout most of the film, so it’s a must for me.
1. Maz Kanata
I found Maz immediately charming, from the way she dressed-down Solo and Finn to her mischievous comments about her “boyfriend” Chewbacca. The character is interesting to me as sort of a Star Wars equivalent to Rick from Casablanca and her castle is an intergalactic Rick’s Café Americain where all sorts of shady and upstanding types can go for rest and relaxation. The supplemental material indicates that she feels and can use the Force, but is not a Jedi or Sith, and she used her powers to make her way as a pirate. I like the exploration of non-jedi using the Force, and there’s something absurd and so very Star Wars about a tiny little tangerine-headed old lady space pirate queen. We have seen a Maz figure on that motion poster and I’m not sure it’s a 6-inch scale figure, but I hope so.
Well, that’s my list, what’s yours? Or are you done with The Force Awakens for now? I think we are going to get a bit of a break from The Force Awakens in the black series for a bit and that’s fine with me, but I’d like to see some of these guys sprinkled into the line as it hopefully continues for many years to come.
