I’m wrapping up my look at the six figures from Funko’s Magic: The Gathering line with figure #1: Jace Beleren. Jace, according to the Wizards of the Coast website, is a master of Blue Magic, specializing in mental magic, like mind reading and illusion casting. The design has a bit of a monk-like feel to me and seems to have more of an anime influence (that hair!) than some of the other Magic characters in the line.
Jace is nicely sculpted with lots of interesting costume details like rivets, medallions, costume seams, and armor.
The cloth of the cape and tabbard have a nice, slightly windswept look to them and hang with a weight to them. The hood and cape are one removable piece, and the head and outfit are fully sculpted.
The head seems a little small to me, but that’s to be expected with figure with removable head gear.
Accessories
The removable cape is the only accessory included. An energy effect would have not gone amiss here. The cape is cast in a very flexible plastic, but the design does still hinder some arm movement.
My cape has a tear in it that allows a little more arm movement, but it’s still restrictive.
Jace has the following articulation:
- Ball-and-socket head, neck, torso, and ankles
- Swivel/Hinged shoulders, wrists and hips
- Swivel biceps and thighs
- Double-hinged knees
- Single-hinged elbows
The ankle movement is hindered by the large baggy pants, but the movement is otherwise good, excluding the arm movement/ cape hindrance mentioned above.
The paint is mostly the white designs on his mostly blue outfit, and those are nice and crisp.
The eyes are a little weird, however. They are big blue dots. I’m thinking they’re meant to convey a glowing-eye effect, but he really looks surprised.
Jace has a couple issues, but is overall a neat figure. I really like the silhouette his caped and hooded costume make.
Thanks again for reading and thanks to Funko for sending along these excellent figures for review.
Make sure to check back the rest of this week for more Funko Legacy goodness in the form of Game of Thrones Series 2 figures!
