Magic: The Gathering week continues with a look at the Elf Mage Nissa Revane. The Legacy line is Funko’s foray into the 6-inch scaled super-articulated action figure game. They started with Game of Thrones and have continued with Magic: The Gathering.
Now, I’m not a big follower of Magic: The Gathering, but they are playing in the very fertile fields of fantasy fiction and have created a lot of interesting takes on typical fantasy tropes.
Nissa here looks to be a take on elves. Her outfit makes me think of the Forest Men of Arboria from Flash Gordon, and the wooden staff brings to mind a mage that takes power from the natural world.
Nissa comes with a cool staff that is textured and sculpted to look like branches grown into a classic magical staff.
The staff is a little bit flexible, but holds it shape pretty well.
Nissa has articulation similar to her line-mates and current Marvel Legends with:
- Ball-jointed head, neck, and mid-torso
- Swivel/hinged hips, shoulders, ankles, and wrists
- Swivel biceps and thighs
- Single-hinged elbows
- Double-hinged knees
The range of motion on the articulation points is good for the most part. The legs are slightly hindered by the design and shape of the skirt.
The skirt is cast in a very flexible material, but the shape keeps the legs from moving too far forward or to the side.
The ball joints in the torso and neck allows for a lot of nice, natural movement. She can look up really well, which is a little unusual for a figure with a large collar and long hair.
Paint, while much simpler than the beautiful prototype paint, is still good. I like the subtle paint they use for the tattoos; it has a natural look to it that I like.
The outfit could have used some washes, but there is a cool dirty wash on the gloves that reads like leather to me.
I think the plastic used for the flesh tone here works even better than what they used for Liliana. There is an almost porcelain feel to it and it’s not glossy at all.
I can’t really comment as to how well this figure represents Nissa Revane from the Magic card games and comics, but the figure is a very effective and fun representation of an elf mage/warrior.
But as an old school D&D fan, I can appreciate this figure as a really fun elf mage campaign character.
