Playmates – Ninja Turtles Movie (2014) April O’Neil

Playmates Ninja Turtles Movie (2014) April O'Niel featured

I’ll keep this short as I’m certain this could quickly go down into a complete and utter bitch fest about Ninja Turtles. I don’t collect Turtle action figures; I bought the NECA set a few years ago and I’ve been completely happy with that set. I always look at the Playmates action figure and think, “Opportunity lost, they look cheesy, don’t have a lot of articulation and not much paint.” And that’s why I don’t work in the toy Industry because these things sell. They must, since this formula of toy has been around for decades. These toys sell.

But that doesn’t get me to buy them. I saw these on the toy shelf the other day, and figured, since we reviewed Shredder and Donatello, I’d figure I’d jump in with April O’Neil. Why? For the pleasure of the pain.

The figure is sculpted in a somewhat preposed supermodel strike-a-pose state. And then some ball shoulder and hip joints were added. I think the head might be on a ball joint. And as a vanilla-looking figure on a shelf, I can see it. I can see it as an action figure that I played with back in 1982 when I was 9 years old. I don’t see it in today’s market, but then I’m not 9 anymore. This figure isn’t that far from a McDonald’s toy: limited posability, cheap-feeling plastic, limited paint — where’s my Happy Meal?

Yeah, limited paint. Robokillah asked me the other day if we could use her as a Kitty Pride. Potentially, yes, but the head sculpt might have to hydrospanned up a bit to match 6 inches. This figure is not 6-inch scale, more like an even 5 inches. And I do like the head sculpt. A good Robokillah paint job will make this look like magic! It doesn’t look like Megan Fox, but that’s probably OK so that April here can be used in any Turtles display.
