Four Horsemen Studios: Mythic Legion Advent of Decay Skeleton Soldier

Our look at the Mythic Legions Advent of Decay figures continues with the Skeleton Soldier! I’m a huge fan of super-articulated skeleton action figures and have already built a decent sized army of Mythic Legions skeletons, so I was looking forward to these figures quite a bit. Let’s take a closer look at the Mythic Legions Advent of Decay Skeleton Soldiers!

The figure comes in the collector-friendly standard packaging we all know and love and comes with the usual ton of accessories with a bit of a twist: this figure comes with two different torsos!

I’m not sure that I knew the figure had two torsos when I ordered, but fortunately I picked up two anyway. The figure comes with a spear, a sword, two heads, two torsos, a helmet spike, a helmet tail, removeable helmet spikes, a shield, a removeable shield grip, removeable shoulder pads, a weapon strap, and three connector pieces for wings.

The packaged torso is the female torso as seen on Gwendolynne Heavensbrand and the other torso uses a Goblin upper torso and Elf/Vampire knight lower torso. It’s really nice to have that variety and it’s fairly simple to pop the arms off of the packaged figure and into the extra one.

The shield is a new accessory to me and I like the simple, classic design. I’ve seen the sword a few times now and it looks good and fits well into the hand. The only issue I have is that the shield handle and the spear kind of stretches out the hand a bit. The shoulder pads and strap and helmet can combine to make a very nice looking highly armored figure.

The sculpt adds new thinner skeleton pieces to the armory, and I like that they included skeleton feet and hands. The additional skeleton parts helps sell the skeleton effect better than regular gloves and boots.

The wing attachment works great for this figure and since I only have skeleton wings, it’s the most appropriate figure for them and the overall effect is pretty cool. Since this is based on the thinner base bodies, the skeleton parts are thinner and I feel like I like it’s more effective as a skeleton warrior in the Harryhausen vein. I do wish the neck was bones as it uses the standard neck from the other female and elf figures.

I can’t quite decide which torso I like better, but I’m leaning toward the female version.

I think the male version looks best all armored up as it balances out the figure a bit more.

The articulation is similar to the other Mythic Legions figures except it does not have the thigh swivel. I find that poseability is still good because the swivel/hinge knees compensates pretty well for the loss of the thigh swivel. The joints feel really tight and getting them moving was a little scary, but they held up to the pressure.

The helmet head has removeable spike at the top and removeable horns on the sides. You can use the removeable horns from other Mythic Legions figures with this helmet as well.

The paint is also very nice with a lot of washes and drybrushing to bring out the details.

Overall I like these figures a lot and I think they fit it great with the existing skeleton legion builders and add a nice variety to my skeleton army.

The Four Horsemen are having a sale on Advent of Decay figures today on their site at 9PM Eastern time, so head over there tonight if you missed out on the pre-orders. Fair Warning: this stuff goes fast!
