Action Figure Feature – Prometheus Chair Suit Engineer

The enigmatic Engineers from the film Prometheus are starting to hit stores just in time for the DVD release of Ridley Scott’s return to the world of ALIEN.  Let’s take a look at this great new toy from NECA!

Seeing glimpses of these guys running around in the Prometheus trailers really hyped me for that film.  I mean, these are the space jockeys from the original Alien and we finally get to know more about them!

ACCESSORIES

This figure comes with no accessories, though it’s not like he is really missing anything.  I suppose a “vase” with alien goo could have been cool, but this figure is a huge chunk of super-articulated action figure goodness, so the packaging doesn’t really feel empty.  The accessory he really needs is that big old phallic chair from the movies, but I wouldn’t expect to see that in this line because that would be a huuuuuge chunk of plastic, and although NECA has brought us some amazing stuff I would never have expected to see in action figure lines, I think this might be beyond even them.  One can hope, though, right?

SCULPT

NECA has this kind of stuff down to a beautiful science.  The sculpt detail on this figure is insanely nice.  The textures and bio-mechanical details are just beautifully rendered.

The head sculpt itself is a marvelous thing.  I could fill the whole review with just pictures of this this head sculpt.

The only thing I’m not sure about on this guy is scale.  The figure is eight inches tall, which is huge, and the character is supposed to be eight feet tall in the film.  Now, if NECA did six-inch scale figures (a six-inch figure would represent a six-foot-tall character), I think this would be perfect, but they tend to work on a seven-inch scale, where a seven-inch figure represents a six-foot-tall individual.  Even though they are huge, I think the engineers might be a little too small.  I guess I’ll find out for sure when David arrives (the prototype was shown at SDCC).

ARTICULATION

Here’s another place NECA has been stepping up more and more lately:  I absolutely love all the articulation they packed into this figure.  He’s got a ball jointed neck, ankles, abs and wrists; bicep swivels; and swivel/hinged shoulders, elbows, knees and hips.  The articulation all has really nice range of motion and allows for some expressive posing.  It also all feels very solid and stable.  I didn’t feel any concern about limbs snapping off or floppy articulation.  The articulation is of great quality.

NECA has also been using MOTUC-style hips in that the swivel/hinged hips are covered by a thin plastic overlay.  Unlike many MOTUC figures, however, the plastic on the overlay here is super soft and pliable, so that articulation is not hindered at all.

Even with the huge rib cage and torso tech sculpt, this figure still has a decent abdominal range of motion.  He will definitely be able to sit in a chair if they ever decide to make one!

PAINT

Paint is pretty minimal, but it’s nicely done with a couple of different types of drybrushing to bring out all the Giger-riffic sculpted detail and some nice gloss for the eyes.

OVERALL

This is an awesome figure and a great representation of the character from Prometheus.  I have seen these going for $15.99 at TRU and that strikes me as a good price for this big chunk of super-articulated of plastic.

  1. Veebs – the cave is just my backdrop for the snake mountain throne room at a different angle with some pipes thrown in. These figures are so cool, though, I’m thinking I need to build something for them.

    Mario – Thanks!

    Fengshcwing – Ha! Thank you.

  2. You know what else is incredible, aside from the figure itself? Your God darned pics!

    You rock as always, Matt.
