Figured I'd start up the Mafex thread for Star Wars.
Anybody have an idea when Mando/Grogu 2.0 is supposed to release? I have a request to pay for my Figuarts Indy and am thinking of having them hold him so he and Mando can ship together.
AmiAmi says December, so I would expect it to be around two more months until Mando releases.
Mafex "The Rescue" Luke Skywalker.
So, I'm torn. As a Luke Skywalker stan and a big Mafex fan, this should be a slam dunk for me. It's also the first 1:12 Luke we've gotten this *actually* from "The Rescue" episode of The Mandalorian, rather than a repurposed Ewok Village Luke like the SH Figuarts and The Black Series' figures. It's also got a wonderful looking soft goods cloak that blows the competition out of the water. So, again. Should be a slam dunk.
And then I get to the face, which reads "Ken Doll" rather than "Mark Hamill" to me. I can mostly forgive that since they're working off of the deepfake Luke rather a true Hamill likeness--even though the SHF one was *ridiculously* good at capturing Hamill, definitely the best ever at 1:12.Β
What I almost can't forgive though, are those shoulders and elbow joints. Why are they so gappy? I guess it's a Mafex thing, but they're very ugly and distracting. I know once he's posed up in a Force using pose or lightsaber swinging, or really anything other than standing straight up, arms at his side, he'll look great. But still, it's an odd look.Β
Β
Anyway, I'm still definitely getting this, but I had to share my thoughts. What do y'all think?Β

I think he looks good and will definitely look better in person. I've already swapped my Black Series BF for Mafex, ordered Mando v2 so when he comes i'll get rid of my Black Series version. Was planning to do the same with Ahsoka so might as well do Luke too.
I hope Mafex does the OT and gives us a proper Han and Leia too.
I'm waiting on the Mafex season 2 Mando this month, but I actually cancelled my Mafex Ahsoka. It's kind of the same issue I have with this Luke. The joints and articulation are far too prominent and I don't feel the likeness is quite there. Again, the Mafex Ahsoka has a wonderful soft-goods cloak, but I already ordered a custom one for my Black Series. It sucks because I want to support this line, but after watching an interview with Frederick from FredrixFigures (someone who personally worked on costumes on The Mandalorian and Ahsoka), I decided to cancel. He stated in the video that he was passing on the Mafex in favor of the Black Series because Hasbro perfectly nailed the Ahsoka costume without sacrificing the aesthetic in favor of unnecessary cuts for articulation.Β Β
The new Pattinson Batman also has a very noticeable gap on the abdomen articulation that you can't just pose away. I know these are toys meant to be moved and played with, but I feel like Mafex is going down a weird route with their molding of joints that I don't like. Even Revoltech is getting much better at hiding their insane articulation.Β
@nanigans His face definitely matches the episode to my eyes. I would probably display him with the moving saber blade and hood on which would cover the issues you have with him.

Yeah, the cloak is the best part of this figure. It softens the issues out quite a bit. He'll definitely find a way into my display, no worries there. I'm too big of a Luke fanboy lol
Β
Good. Even with those issues, it's a really nice figure. And getting the costume right is huge to me.
Same! Even if 99% of people wouldn't notice the differences--to be fair, they are extremely subtle and only exacerbated by the fact his costume is all black--it matters to me, heheΒ
Heh, I'm the exact same way. I have two life-size Fett helmets and most people don't get why I have two of the same thing but... The paint job is different!
And that Luke, the first thing I noticed.... After my initial "is that Luke? That's gotta be Luke. It can't be.... It has to be.... He has the hilt! It's Luke!" teary eyed reaction, was his new outfit that is very in line with his old one but more Jedi-y. Which is awesome.Β
Exactly. The Disney era hasn't been perfect (to be fair, neither was the Prequel or even OT era), and putting aside the uncomfortable AI conversation aside, I think all Star Wars fans were pretty united in two things: Baby Yoda is cute AF and Luke's return was amazing. Glad we finally have a proper 1:12 figure to go with that whole sequence.Β
Every time I've disliked a Mafex face in the promos I've liked it a lot more in hand.Β The only exception I can think of is Psylocke and Jean Grey--their anime-inspired faces look identical both in the promos and in hand.
I guess that Luke was announced at a Medicom event overnight, and they also showed an unpainted prototype for 4-LOM, one of the bounty hunters in that scene from Empire Strikes Back that also features Dengar and IG-88.Β Weirdly deep pull for them to do a figure on that guy.
