I like most of them. Can we get a Mutant Giraffe Mech-a-neck?
Hot dang, this line just continues to impress. In that new cross-sell image, damned if my eyes didn't immediately go to Sla'ker. Such a fun inclusion, and a some great details on him. If Raph has Ram-man armor, then it's pretty likely Mikey is gonna be Battle-cat armored as per the earlier leaks, which is great. As with Leo and Don, Raph just works, and I love the weapons they gave him. Hopefully the gauntlet weapon can detach to be held in hand.
Shredder is amazing, except for the Hordak feet. They're a bit clunky and the ankle cuff has always looked off to me, but I'm sure they'll be fine once in hand. His axe is pretty awesome. Horde crossbow is an interesting inclusion.
Mutated Ram-man and Moss-man are both really fun designs, but along with the other MOTU figures, with the exception of Mouse-jaw, I'm pretty sure they're passes for me. Super fun, but with everything else out there, I need to cut back somewhere. Beast-man continues to be weakest design of the bunch, i think mostly due to not including a new chest armor to tie everything together. The red chest armor just seems to blend in with his fur colour too much compared to the brightness of the other armor.
What a great surprise these new reveals are. Toy Shiz's video mentioned getting pre-sale info from Mattel soon, so here's hoping these are fan channel, or whatever we're calling Diamond distributing and comic shop availability, because these at retail would be a nightmare up here in Canada.
If Mikey is Battle Cat-inspired, I am DOWN for a Battle Cat with Samurai/Japanese-style barding. That would follow the formula, as right now we have two turtles taking on the roles of two mutated good guys, and one turtle taking on the role of a good guy wearing samurai gear. So BC in samurai gear balances it out. Although I still think it's weird to make Mikey the 'riding beast/animal companion' analogue here. If anything, Mikey should be Orko or something.
The one thing I'm not super pleased about is something that kind of already has precedent in TMNT variants so whatever, but it's Raph having his sai turned into basically swords. Space Cadet Raph also got a sword thing in the vintage line instead of sai. And I believe there were a few other variants over the years that did the same or similar. Yeah, these swords are still very sai-shaped, but they're definitely not actually sai in any way. They're not even really anything like the edged daggers that look like sai that Raph usually gets in a lot of toys and media.
Very minor complaint, mind. But something that made me roll my eyes for a second.
Hard agree that Beast Man really could have used a new chest armor piece to tie together the new oni/samurai elements, as his vintage-style one now looks a bit out of place. Not bad enough that I won't buy it, but it's noticeable.
Oh, and if they mix Foot Soldiers with Skeletor's Skeleton Warriors... I'mma be brooooooke.
I am loving this line. All of them look pretty great, though Beast Man looks a bit disjointed with the armour.
Can't wait to see them in person. I am not happy if they went with a solid purple plastic for Mutated He-Man because I feel the translucent shows better. However I get it if they did make that change.
Now what is the price for these in Canada? I see DJC Collectibles has them up for preorder at $30Cdn. My only hope is that the big boys (Walmart, TRU) can come in at a little less because at $30 each I'll have to be selective.
Hopefully all four turtles are available... most TMNT fans are all-or-nothing.
Is it intentional that Beast Man looks the least beastly?
Snake Mountain sighting at one of my Targets.
The vast empty wasteland at Target is a hold over from the death of TRU when there was talk of Target and Walmart picking up the slack. This is the only Target in my area that continues to have this giant waste of space. Occasionally they have some of the large ride on vehicles or a few educational type toys in this area.
Currently waiting for FedEx to deliver He-Man and Beastman. I couldn't wait and shipped a two figure POL.
I got Filmation He-Man and Beastman, and I opened them up and really like both of them. The colors and sculpts really make them look like the cartoon, and there is just so much nostalgia while looking at these toys.
The only gripe I had was that it is hard to get the sword all the way in the sheath on He-Man. And once it's in, it is very tight and stuck in the sheath, and it requires force and caution to get it out safely.
I don't know if it's this way on all the He-Man figures, or just mine.
But I really like these a lot. I mean, they are essentially asking us to just buy characters we have all over again. But they made these so, unique, and nostalgic, I have absolutely no problem with that and had a blast opening these, looking at them, and posing them.
@supercamel-1982 The sheath is the same with my He-Man. Also, Beastman had very tight hips similar to a Classified figure where it feels like the hip peg is twisting rather than moving freely.
You know, I had forgotten about it since we ordered it last year, but shouldn't the Eternia playset be finished and shipping before too long?
Wasn't it supposed to be finished by the end of this year/start of next year?
Spotted Snake Mountain at a Target near Syracuse today in that same area Mr Boshek pointed out. Only noticed it because I could see the box from the Neca section.
Looks great, like Grayskull, the packaging just really grabs at your sense of nostalgia. I was strong enough this time to walk away, don't need to drop $80 on something I'm not sure I really have the space for and I've kinda had my fill of MOTU origins at this point.
It kinda mirrors my feelings for the line as a kid. Was there at the beginning and was into all of it, once they hit the Snake Men I had moved on to other things. Feel like that these days, too, except for the occasional release like Point Dread.
Turtles of Grayskull is a line I would have been absolutely all over as a kid.
For me the figures so far seem to break down into four categories - MOTU inspired Turtle characters, Turtle inspired MOTU characters, mashups, and mutated.
IMO the MOTU inspired Turtle characters look the best. Shredder feels a bit like a standard Shredder on a MOTU body but the turtles themselves are probably my favourite figures in the line (very curious to see if Mikey will be Orko or Battle Cat inspired in the next wave) and Krang looks pretty cool as well.
The Turtle inspired MOTU characters are the weakest for me. The Turtle stuff on MAA is very subtle and Beast Man could easily be a Samurai Beast Man in the normal line. I know these figures aren't meant to be straight mashups and there's a story coming but it just feels they could have leaned into TMNT a little bit more than they did.
The mashup figures (Mouse Jaw and Sla'ker) are probably my favourites after the Turtles themselves and some of the more creative figures in the line. I wish more were done like this.
Which leaves the mutated figures. The design work is pretty nice overall but again they don't scream TMNT (Ram-Man is the closest). Same for the translucent purple. It looks cool but it's not really a TMNT thing. I'm sure there will be a story reason (like different mutagen or mutagen behaves differently on Eternia) but just as figures it doesn't make me think TMNT.
So a mixed bag for me. I love the concept and will definitely be getting some of them but feel they should have gone more in the mashup direction if I'm being honest.
Got in my POL today and it had a few Origins figures in it. Rattlor is about as perfect as I could expect. One of my favorite vintage figures and they did a great job on him. Part of me is a little disappointed that his tail is still that hollow plastic that only looks good from the back, but another part of me is so nostalgic for that and doesn't care if it looks bad.
Yeah.. no notes. It's an Origins figure of a terrific vintage figure and is therefore terrific and I'm very glad to finally have it.
Filmation He-Man was also in that POL and, now that I have him in hand, I definitely have thoughts. Most of them are positive. He's just great. Love the new proportions. Love that Mattel did the right thing here by the customers and built a whole new body for him. The colors are great. Love that they included the Sword of the Ancients. In fact, I think including various Filmation-specific pieces like this is going to be a huge selling point for this entire line.
He-Man just looks excellent and I'm more excited about them doing this (sub)line than I thought I would be.
HOWEVER....
They're still using the wrong wrist hinges and I actually think, at this point, that's unacceptable. First of all, you're already doing it right on (some) Masterverse figures. So I know you know we want this. Also, you sculpted and tooled a whole new figure for this He-Man without re-using parts, so there's no reason NOT to re-engineer the articulation. And most damning of all.... this figure is based on the place where the 'held aloft' pose was fucking BORN. How do you fuck this up? It's practically inconceivable.
But it's not a lost cause. This is He-Man. THE character of the franchise. Give it a few waves and release a He-Man with a smiling head, a right hand with the proper articulation, and optional fists. I'd buy it. I'd buy this damn figure all over again with those parts, and display both figures happily. Do it. Do it.
My only other complaint is that I think they went too wide with the sword. I know it's supposed to be Origins proportions, but I just think it's too much. Needs to be thinned down just a little bit and it would have looked better. But that's a minor issue.
Anyone have experience with a broken figure? I just my Skeleton Warriors 2 pack in, and immediately upon opening, one of their knee joints snapped, like with the slightest amount of pressure. The other figure was ok, but this one seems to have two bad knees. Never thought I'd have to do a hot water bath on an Origins figure.
I've got a question out to the e-tailer I got them from, so we'll see what happens.
Got an email that Mattel was restocking some older exclusives on the Creations site - of course Camo Khan was sold out before I could even load the page 3 minutes after the email showed up.
