@docsilence ah, gotcha. Yeah, they foolishly thought boys didn't want lady figures. At least do She Hulk! But that's awesome on Wolverine. You can get 3d printed replacement claws if need be!
@ru1977 That’s another reason the lenticular shields were stupid, particularly those who wanted to keep their secret identities. For a line called Secret Wars, let’s use shields that show our real faces every time we move. Steve and Tony may have been fine with it, but I bet Peter was like “Aw, fu$&@!!”
@ru1977 I literally was just typing up "3D printed claws Secret Wars Wolverine" since folks are charging $25 PER CLAW for the originals!
The "no girl figures" thing really was wild. Part of why I mostly gave up on McFarlane's DC figures in recent years, actually, since he still subscribes vocally to that philosophy.
@docsilence maybe it's true for a lot of boys, I dunno, but I got every single female GI Joe figure back in the day..except Cover Girl I think. And Leia was an absolute must of course. Bah! Teela! And I kept hoping for the lady Visionaries damnit.
Lenticular shields?
They all came packed with these shields that had lenticular inserts with images that alternated the image when you tilted it.
They were lame. I mean "fun"
I really couldn't disagree more. As a kid, I loved the lenticular shields. I think that as adults we sometimes forget what it's like to get new toys as a child.
Lenticular shields, holograms, action features...I loved that stuff as a kid!
@captaincracker fair enough... I was like 12 when the Secret Wars figures came out and even then I thought the lenticular shields were L-A-M-E! Loved the fogures, threw the shields in a shoebox in the closet never to be seen.
I mean in the mid 70s I had the Mego female characters in the lines I had. Invisible Girl, Zera, Uhura. Actively wanted Scarlet Witch, Wasp etc.
Yeah I'm in the shields were lame camp. But if someone enjoyed them, that's great too. They weren't used by me. But I loved the figures.
The only figure I had that got to keep his shield was Cap, and that's because he didn't have his normal shield. The rest went in a box or wherever it was I tossed things back in 1984. I don't remember.
I definitely never understood the "boys don't buy/play with girl figures" argument. When I was a boy, if there was a female on a team or a female villain, I wanted it. I had every female Mego figure, any of the pocket heroes female characters, Dr. Helena Russell from Space:1999.
Mego Invisible Woman and Uhura.
Kenner all versions of Princess Leia.
I wanted them all and would have been very disappointed if they were never made.

I was 6 or 7 and had a great time with those shields. As an adult, they have no appeal to me, but as a kid, they were awesome! I was amazed by that space age lenticular technology as a kid.
I was too young to get those toys. Only ones I ever got were second hand at comic shops and they were loose with no shields. If this wave is a retro throwback on the OG cardback, I think the shields would be part of the retro feel.
I liked the shields just based on the coolness of the lenticular hocus pocus, but I didn't have any use for them in terms of playtime, outside of Captain America. My mom made a little version of Captain America's shield (complete with star) out of felt that fit just inside of the Secret wars shield so that worked for me.
