So, it is interesting that Mattel probably owns the specific cardback design from their line of figures - though Marvel Clearly owns the Secret Wars trademark and trade dress from the comic books - which was in fact different from what was on the toys.
So, Hasbro can likely do homage figures on an updated card that modifies the logo to more closely reflect the comic logo, etc - or, more remotely, maybe as part of the updated licensing agreement with Mattel Marvel negotiated specific rights to the Secret Wars toy trade dress that they could then sub-license to other partners.
If I had to bet money on it - I'd probably go with they'll do card backs that are based on the cover to Secret Wars #1
Or they could do what they did with the Universe 2-packs and use a different cover for each figure, though I think that's less likely.
I count 16 characters on that cover. If Hulk and Thing were BAFs, that could be two waves right there. If Wasp was a mini-accessory, Reed could also be included. Man, can you imagine getting everyone on that cover in 1984?!
That's why I'm a little surprised people were so unhappy about the Rogue figure coming with Destiny. She completes this cover! (I know, I know, She-Hulk and Wasp aren't in the right costumes but they're close enough to make the cover feel complete to me).
I'm really excited to see what this wave brings, although given the Strange Tales line-up watch Secret Wars be a God Doom reissue, modern Spider-Boy, Deadpool, "Dan's favorite Wolverine", Black Widow, Amadeus Cho Hulk reissue, and symbiote Spider-Man.
I think that the main problem with Rogue is the lack of an alternate youthful face. Rogue is supposed to be 17 years old when she joined the X-Men and that face sculpt is NOT of a 17 year old. Besides, I'm sure we'll see that Rogue re-sold next year for "X-Men '97".
I love everyone's wish-lists and thoughts on who could be in the "Secret Wars" wave. Since we have six characters for the wave confirmed, I have no idea which of the original eight could get made. Everyone says black costume Spider-Man is a sure thing, but the original wave had him in his red-and-blue suit and he wore that suit for eight of the twelve issues, so who knows? I'm sure we'll see a Spider-Man in the wave and Wolverine in the brown-and-tan suit (especially after the last two Wolverine figures with that suit), regardless of what color the claws will be, but if I had to guess the other four slots of the six figures, I believe we'll see Kang, Magneto, Captain America and Iron Man with Spidey and Wolvie. I'd love to see a shield with no holes in it for Captain America (but just watch, it might be the broken shield from "Secret Wars") and I'd love an alternate Jim Rhodes head for Iron Man. Doctor Doom is in the three pack and I doubt we'd get a new Doctor Octopus with bendy wire tentacles for only $25 in a wave, so I don't know if Doom or Doc Ock would make the cut. I'd imagine when Doc Ock gets made next, he'll likely be a $35 to $40 Deluxe figure. That said, the next Doctor Doom figure needs the "Kirby crackle" energy effect accessories for his hands. Also, if we got figures for characters like Daredevil, Falcon, Baron Zemo, Hobgoblin, Iceman and Electro for "Secret Wars", that'd be just fine with me. I'd add them to my collection in a heartbeat.
As for figures of other characters, if I could pick, I'd love a new Hulk with butterfly shoulder joints and better hair and face sculpts, Thor with a cloth cape and Mjolnir, an updated Colossus, Cyclops with an optic blast, Wasp, She-Hulk, the Lizard (that's not an exclusive and easy to find, please, Hasbro), Titania, the Absorbing Man, Volcana, Enchantress, and any of the Wrecking Crew. That said, I hope we get at least one female figure in the rumored six figures "Secret Wars" wave. It'd be a shame if the 40th anniversary for "Secret Wars" was only six figures, but the 20th anniversary for the 'X-Men' movies and the 20th anniversary for "Marvel Legends" only got four figures in those waves, so I wouldn't be surprised if we only get the six.
Magneto I don't see coming. We just had a classic Magneto in 97 wave 1. Just cause Spider-Man was not in the black suit most of the event doesn't mean he will be classic in wave. That storyline is most iconically remembered for introducing it, so it feels more on brand. I don't think the wave will be confined to characters in the OG routine. You may get Titania or Volcana here. Or even a Beyonder. I think the Beyonder would be a character I think is very likely to be made.
@renfield75 And, of course, their is nothing stopping them from redoing She-Hulk and Wasp to match up with their Secret Wars looks. Granted the likelihood of that is almost zero for the first wave since they both just came out. However if they continue with the subline I could see them showing up in later waves.
If they can put out Titania, Volcana and the Beyonder (in that order of priority), they can pack the rest out with Wolverine and Iron Man till the cows come home.
(Assuming it’s a retro card wave of course. If they lock a BAF Titania behind all those WolverSpiderIronMen, there will be blood.
Maybe not blood.
Bitching.)
Doesn't WM frequently have Cap figures as exclusives? Wouldn't be surprised if that were the case here. Maybe one of the Spideys would be a Target or Amazon exclusive, i dunno. But I do think they wouldn't JUST do the black costume version.
Don't see them doing Hulk or non A-listers in this line, would gladly be wrong as again i'd like to complete the villains rosters in particular. I still think they get us some of them in some other waves.
And i still think BeyonderDoom shows up in this line, poor sales of that 2-pack notwithstanding. TIme will tell
I did notice that the Beyonder Doom in the two pack skewed towards the look/colors of the comic book appearance of that armor: the tech-strap on his thigh is the same color as his leg armor in the comic and it’s green on the original toy, and the “belt” isn’t paint “belt colors” (black with yellow buckle) like the original toy either . . . so there is some wiggle room to go “toy accurate”. Although honestly if they did that I would want them to include the two crazy guns the toy came with, modify the tech-strap on the thigh to peg the smaller gun in, and add the “jetpack” the original toy had sculpted along with a place to rack the rifle. That, along with pinless limbs, would be a significant upgrade.
My main want of any Secret Wars line (outside of Titania and Volcana) is a Beyonder figure, but only if it's the swanky white jacket and pants look, and not the armored look with the metal tires connected to his shoulders.
Hot Wheels is doing a Secret Wars promotion that includes lenticular shields:
Hellverine releasing at the same time as this really is getting weirder all the time...
That has to be Dan's favorite Wolverine...
That is quite the chin.
