Claire Temple, played by Rosario Dawson, is sort of the Marvel Netflix equivalent of The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Agent Coulson. She’s had a role of varying size in each of the Netflix shows, save The Punisher, so it seemed appropriate that she would get a figure. What seems appropriate doesn’t always happen in action figure land, so I was glad to pick up Claire and Luke from Walmart.com the other day. Let’s take a look!
The set comes with Luke Cage and Claire Temple figures, a purse, and two extra sets of hands for Claire.
At first glance, Luke appears to be a repaint of the SDCC Defenders Box set Luke Cage in more classic colors, but if you look closely at the legs, you can see there is a slight texture to the legs that I didn’t see on the Defenders Luke.
It’s a little weird because it looks like the same legs, just with the texture. It seems a bit more like jeans with the texture, so that’s nice, but it feels like a weird use of tooling resources to me.
The sculpt, like the Defenders Luke, works perfectly for me. The proportions are great and the new color gives you more of that comic book Luke Cage vibe that the other figure didn’t quite have. The yellow on the sleeves is a slightly different yellow than the chest, but I feel like the photos emphasize that difference more than I actually see it in hand.
Clair appears to be new upper torso and head with some existing legs and arms. I think the idea is to represent her outfit from the Iron Fist episode where they travel to China and Claire uses the claws for fighting.
I’d say it’s fairly effective, though the legs seem a tad skinny and a bit bowlegged. Speaking of that Iron Fist episode, the second pair of hands is the claw weapons she uses in that episode. I can’t recall if she ever uses them again, but they are probably the most toyetic accessory you could include with a Claire Temple figure.
They look pretty cool, though Claire’s expression is a little pleasant for fight scenes.
I think the likeness is pretty good and I can definitely see Rosario. It’s not creepy good like these can sometimes be, but it’s pretty close and I think the printing technique finishes off her features really well.
The last set of hands are a couple of blue splayed hands. These are meant to convey surgical gloves, which is quite a clever idea and appropriate for the character. I would have suggested a grip hand be used for one so she could hold a scalpel.
The purse looks to be a repaint of Mary Jane’s purse from the Spider-Man two-pack, and though I honestly don’t remember Claire’s purse, it works okay as a medical bag.
The articulation is Marvel Legends standard with:
- Swivel/hinge neck, shoulders, hips, wrists, elbows, and ankles
- Swivel hips
- Double hinged knees
- Ball and socket torso and head
The upper torso articulation feels a little tight to me and doesn’t have the range of motion that other female figures have had.
Overall, this set is pretty good and I’m glad to add Claire to my Netlix Defenders set. There is always a little bit of a nagging annoyance at buying a figure twice because of multi-packs, but this Luke is really nice and I like Luke and this sculpt enough to collect two.
