The samurai rabbit ally of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is back on TV, and he is also new to the modern toy line. The good part is that we have a look at not one, but TWO of his new Playmates figures, and the BEST part is, we are giving away a Usagi figure, signed by his creator himself, Stan Sakai!
As a child of the 1980s, the Ninja Turtles have been with me for most of my life. My brother and I were into the original line so much that a new toy could not be released without us begging and pleading with our parents to buy it. We had just about everything, and it made for one of the biggest and most satisfying action figure lines of all time.
With so many figures, it can be easy to get a little lost in terms of highlights because things can just run together, but man, Usagi Yojimbo was always one of my favorite TMNT toys. Back then, I had no idea that Usagi was his own entity prior to his inclusion in the TMNT franchise, all I knew is that a samurai bunny went together with ninja turtles perfectly. Since the original days, we have had the good fortune of having Usagi fight alongside the Turtles in several instances, and now, as the currently Nickelodeon show enters its final season, the butt-kicking, but calm and collected, rabbit we know and love it back.
So of course there will be toys! While the 5-inch and 12-inch figures featured here (we will have a look at the armored version later this week) started to trickle out to market over the past few weeks, Nick and Playmates coordinated a splash with a release of an SDCC exclusive version of the figure, too. I missed out on that one due to the limited run, but I am happy to be able to add these two to the collection because nothing beats a good rabbit ronin, and these two figures are done well in the established style.
If you have been collecting the modern line, there is no way you will want to miss these figures, as the standard 5-inch is probably one of the best figures in the line thus far. However, if you are just a Usagi fan in general, these make for some great new representations for your shelf. I wish my classic collection wasn’t currently in storage to compare the two figures, but I love that the outfit used here matches what I consider to be the most iconic look for the character.
But, you can see the virtues of these figures in the pictures, right?
