Doctor Voodoo from the SDCC Exclusive Vishanti box set gets a refresh to make the modern Brother Voodoo. I never picked up the Vishanti box set, so I was glad to pick up this version of Jericho Drumm. Let’s take a look at Brother Voodoo!
My overriding memory of Brother Voodoo is the original version from the ’70s with the bare chest and the red/green/yellow color scheme. That was the version that popped up in the Marvel books of my youth, and if I had my druthers, that would be the version we would get. I hadn’t read any Doctor Voodoo books until today on the Marvel app. I enjoyed the first storyline quite a bit and that helped me get a lot more excited for this version.
I guess Jericho gets demoted back to Brother Voodoo at some point in the story because unlike the SDCC version, this Brother Voodoo doesn’t sport the Eye of Agamatto or the Cloak of levitation. He does come with the Staff of Legba, though.
The staff is half powered up and features some demon skull-looking things that are floating. I think a non-powered staff with the skulls hanging would have been a nice image.
Brother Voodoo also comes with a Dormammu hand/arm. I don’t have a lot to say about that until I assemble the guy.
The standard base body works pretty well here and the head sculpt is nice and detailed. I really like the claw-like left hand as it’s expressive and works well for spell casting. The cape has a neat ratty sculpt, though I kind of want to glue it down because it will shift and unbalance sometimes.
The sash is a separate piece and has some neat little skulls hanging from it. Unlike a lot of loose belt pieces, this one stays in place pretty well.
The paint is okay, but I have a couple of issues. Some of the dry brushing on the skulls is pretty rough and the eyes are wonky. I think they are supposed to have a bit of a glow effect to them, but it’s not successful at all.
The articulation is Marvel Legends standard, and the cape and sash don’t get in the way at all.
Brother Voodoo is a good figure and while not my preferred version, he’s pretty fun. I might have skipped this version if I had the Doctor Voodoo version from the box set because I like the skull imagery and the Strange accoutrements.
I never imagined we would get a Brother Voodoo figure, let alone two, and not get a classic version. I don’t have a lot of hope for that version, but it would be neat to make one with a clear variant so you could use him as Jericho’s twin Daniel as well.
