Who wants a big freaking robot that is compatible with their Marvel Legends, figma, S.H. Figuarts or whatever 5- to 7-inch action figure line? I do. And I don’t care if it is a model or a toy.
Lucky for me, Kotobukiya likes my line of thinking and was more than happy to provide me with the perfect model of a monster model kit that is in perfect scale with my 6-inch action figure collecting. Their M.S.G. (Modeling Support Goods) line is a complementary line to their Frame Arms line of model kits; Frame Arms has both a Gundam-compatible line of robots and a 6-inch line of female figures. The idea of the line is that you can add armor and accessories to the kits, making for an incredible amount of combinations. They are tons of fun, and the guns and weapons are perfect for just about any action figure line.
The Gigantic Arms kit comes in a couple of versions: you can buy it as one bot, Powered Guardian, or you can buy the “ship” or the “tank” separately. The box is huge, and the final bot is huge. For those of you experienced in making Master Grade Gundam model kits, this one will feel similar. Lots of poly caps and ball-and-socket joints make this baby run. While it is a snap kit, I did have to superglue the parts where the arms and legs attach; the piece of anchoring plastic kept popping out.
The sculpt on this this is awesome, very robot-like and not humanoid at all. There is a “cockpit” for the driver, the seat back has a peg that works for Kotobukiya figures as well as S.H. Figuarts. The peg does not seem to fit figma, and, of course, Marvel Legends. I think there are enough parts to build a non pegged seat, but I haven’t fully explored this option.
I have not painted the figure. There are still sanding marks and I’m tempted not to paint the figure and hit it with a purity seal, which will give it a matt look. I did the same to Boba Fett and it makes the figure look painted. The sanding marks will take on a battle-damage look, and if I get frisky, I might give it wash, but I’m trying to avoid making it too much like a model.
After taking pics and playing with it, I’m on the fence. I love the play potential, transforming, posting, playing. But this is a light plastic model and sometimes finicky and brittle; it’s not made for heavy play like a “toy.” It makes me want a “toy” version to play with, though. As a display item, this figure is a beauty. Whether it’s with Metal Gear Solid, S.H.I.E.L.D, or Star Wars, this model can easily find a place in your displays.
