Hasbro: Marvel Legends Space Venom Series Electro

You cannot swap a Pizza Spidey hand onto Electro. Despite both figures sharing the same base body, the peg hole on Electro is not the same size as on Pizza Spidey.

Electro is the latest action figure from Hasbro’s Marvel Legends Space Venom Build-A-Figure series. And one of the most pressing questions that collectors had about the figure is if they could swap-out the hands with another figure that shares the same base figure (buck). And the answer is no, at least not without modifying the pegs from the hands you want to swap.

There are other questions that arise about Electro, like “Why the costume?” “What happened to his head?” And “What is up with the blue?” All of that is answered in the recent issues of Spider-Man where Electro underwent major overhauls. These days he’s spewing blue electricity and his head is scarred and he’s got a new costume. Some of that is due to the changes made in last year’s Amazing Spider-Man, which featured Electro, and some of those changes are story-driven. So the short is upgraded powers, scarring, and it was time for a costume change.

Hasbro was cool enough to include another head in the package, the classic yellow masked head, and it does look god on this modern costume. For a character that was created in 1964, Electro pretty much wore the green and yellow for a long time. Sure, he’s had some changes, but in the end that lightning-bolted mask and green and yellow union suit stand the test of time. But like all good things, it was time for a change. And let’s face it, have you tried getting through doorways in that costume?

Gone along with the mask is the yellow electricity. And depending on the conditions, blue is the most common color for electricity, at least it is in nature. Blame science for this change, or for us just being wiser. Am I upset about the change? Not really. The core character hasn’t changed. In fact, he’s more of a badass these days. Am I upset about the lack of extra hands? Yes. Am I upset that we didn’t get a set of classic yellow electricity hands to go with the classic mask? Yes. When we see so many other characters getting useless extra hands and one like Electro doesn’t get them, then I have to cry foul.

The action figure is another solid release. It is built on the Pizza Spidey buck, and, as we all know, that’s a pretty solid figure these days. The head sculpts are beautiful. The super-angry modern head and the whimsical classic head are both simply fantastic. The articulation is another solid feature here, and it’s difficult to fault a formula and figure that works without exception.

I know collectors are hit-and-miss with modern versions and updates of their classic characters, but they shouldn’t be; this costume is based on the original and almost is the original except for some black gloves and black pants. The head can be swapped to give an almost classic Electro that still pops in any display.
