It seems odd that Hasbro did not release this version of Han Solo until the fifth wave of The Force Awakens Figures. I can only assume that is down to all the secrecy surrounding the movie. In a lot of ways, The Force Awakens was Han Solo’s movie. As much as I loved the introduction to Rey, Finn, Poe, and even Kylo Ren, the return of Han Solo, his ship and his first mate Chewbacca provided the majority of the emotional highs and lows of the film. Let’s take a look at old man Solo!
Han comes with his blaster and that’s it. The blaster fits in the holster nicely, but the gun feels a little small and the barrel is bendy.
You might think that’s all Han Solo needs, and from an in-universe perspective I’d agree, but for a retail figure in the Black Series it seems a little light. Some alternate hands might have been nice to include.
The likeness is good, almost creepy good from some angles. I can almost feel Harrison Ford’s withering glare as he judges me the fool for playing with my toys.
The sculpt also seems a little sharper than some recent efforts, and the jacket and boots have a nice leather texture. My main quibble with the sculpt is the left hand is stuck in a gripping pose.
Hasbro wisely included an open hand for their first take on Han, and that feels right for him for gesturing and for Han’s famous blaster firing pose. I also don’t love that they have glued the holster down to the leg and the leg strap is part of the leg sculpt instead of the holster. It does look a bit better, but hinders leg movement.
It’s the same story as the rest of the wave here with the standard black series articulation:
- Swivel/hinge neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips and ankles
- Ball-and-socket mid torso and head
- Double-hinged knees
- Swivel thighs
The mid torso gets good side-to-side and backwards movement but very little forward movement.
Here’s the odd part. The hair color is completely off. It’s a brown base with a light dry brush of gray that looks nothing like Han’s hair in the movie.
Fwoosher Schmitty James did a repaint that adds a lot to the figure. I do like the dry brush applied to the boots and jacket, though they got a little over-enthusiastic and dry brushed part of the pants as well.
Even with the glaring paint error, it’s still a nice figure, if light on accessories.
