Fwoosh Best of 2015: Hot Toys Han Solo and Chewbacca

Hot Toys Han Solo and Chewbacca review - outer box

2015 was a banner year for 6-inch collectors what with some outstanding releases from Mattel’s WWE line like the Defining Moments Hulk Hogan and Sting, Marvel Legends knocking out A- and D-list characters with loving care, and DC Collectibles’ late-arriving DC Icons. For me, though, the figure set that had me most childlike and giddy as I fidgeted around with it was easily the Hot Toys Han Solo and Chewbacca set.

This was one of those splurge purchases where I had to get over my sticker shock when paying for it. But the second I opened it, I realized I probably would have paid more money for it and still felt like I got my money’s worth.

Hot Toys Han Solo and Chewbacca review -iconic shotHot Toys is on the plus side of the adage “you get what you pay for,” as I’ve yet to feel underwhelmed from such a high-end purchase.Toy companies can’t ever seem to get Chewbacca right, so getting one that looks like he stepped off the screen complete with realistic-looking fur and imposing height is pretty cool. And as good as Chewbacca is, Han Solo is even better with a dead-on likeness for Harrison Ford.

But as good as they look, Hot Toys figures cover that necessary prerequisite of being tremendous action figures too. While you probably wouldn’t toss them in a homemade trash compactor, you can have a heck of a lot of fun posing them around. If only I had the kind of disposable income where I could army-build a legion of Stormtroopers for them to blindly stumble into . . .

Per the norm for Hot Toys, Han and Chewie are packed with accessories, including the fun, “chilling in the cockpit” headsets. Throw in the Sideshow Collectibles exclusive Stormtrooper accessories, and I had everything I could possibly want from an A New Hope version of one of my all-time favorite duos. While I’m slightly more of an Empire Strikes Back fan and can’t wait until Hot Toys starts devoting attention to that film, it’s entire Star Wars: A New Hope subset line has been outstanding, and Han and Chewbacca were the standouts.
