As part of it’s “Force Friday” offerings, Hasbro released a new line of 3.75 inch figures from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Admittedly, I’m not the biggest fan of the 3.75 inch scale. Still, at this point in the game if you want a Captain Phasma figure (and who of us doesn’t?!?!), then your best bet is this figure. Because while reports vary wildly about the true availability of the 6-inch Black Series Captain Phasma figure, this 3.75-inch figure of the character is a bit easier to get a hold of.
Just a bit, though.
But don’t let my poor attitude toward the 3.75-inch scale deter you. This Captain Phasma figure’s got a lot going for it. Firstly, it’s a nice sculpt of Phasma in her specialized Stormtrooper armor. The figure’s got a nice metallic look to it. Not chrome by any means, but at least she’s sporting a metallic-looking paint.
The cape/cloak is pretty impressive too. It’s just plastic, but even out of the packaging, the cloak almost looks like cloth. It pretty much had me fooled.
Phasma comes with a blaster rifle and some sort of combining-weapon thing. If you pick up Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren from the same 3.75 inch line, the parts all come together to form… something? A robot? A weapon? I’m not entirely sure. I can tell you that Phasma doesn’t stand well when holding that weapon-thing. If the choice was mine to make, I think I would’ve preferred a figure stand over the combining weapon parts. But seeing that this line is more aimed at the kids than the adult collector, you get the combining transforming weapon-thing.
As for the packaging, Hasbro put some effort into it, at least on the front of the card. The upper right features Kylo Ren’s lightsaber lit-up mask that makes up most of the Force Awakens packaging. The left side of the card features Captain Phasma totally meaning business.
What is disappointing about the figure is the lack of articulation. It really only has the classic five points of articulation (head, arms, and legs). Hasbro’s saving all that sweet articulation for the 3.75 Black Series line that’s recently been announced as a Walmart exclusive, I suppose. But a swivel joint at the waist or hinge joints at the elbows would’ve been nice.
At $9.99, and taking into consideration the size and the lack of articulation, Hasbro’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens Captain Phasma figure is a fine temporary substitute. That is, until you can get your hands on the 6-inch Black Series figure. Then you can hand her off to your nearest little person.
