Fwoosh First Look: NECA Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Traag and Granitor

Traag and Granitor are hitting stores soon and NECA was kind enough to send us along an early set for a first look. Let’s take a look at rock soldiers Traag and Granitor!

The box sports the familiar color and logos we’ve come to expect with the line and the new illustrations and photos are all very bright and eye-catching. The part that especially caught my eye is all those beautiful Triceratons on the cross-sell image on the back!

The set comes with the two figures, two matching blasters, a communicator, a mutagen canister and three wanted posters for the Neutrinos, characters who made their debut in the same cartoon as Traag and Granitor. The posters are printed on a clear slim piece of plastic which gives them a holographic look.

The pistols are a good match for their weapons in the show and fit in the fists and holsters snugly. The holster is a soft plastic so it doesn’t get in the way of leg movement.

The communicator is similar to ones we have got in previous sets, but it feels appropriate for Traag since he’s often getting orders from the boss.

The canister fits snugly in the left hand.

The sculpting on these two is especially nice. I love the rocky textures and craggy shapes that form each limb and the overall likeness to the cartoon is excellent.

There is some part sharing across the two figures, but the unique pieces and color schemes go a long way toward obscuring that fact.

The figures are well-articulated with:

  • Swivel/hinge shoulders, hips, wrists, knees, and ankles
  • Ball and socket neck, head, and mid-torso
  • Waist and thigh swivels
  • Double jointed elbows

I really like the elbow design because the thinner double hinge piece adds to the pile of rocks feel of the characters. I especially like how the ball joints in Granitor’s neck allow for expressive poses.

The paint on these two is also really nice. It has clean lines, a nice matte finish, and I think this is one of the most effective uses of the cel-shading coloring technique in this line yet.

These two aren’t crazy tall, but they are impressively wide, so it adds some more variety to the scale of the Turtle collection on the shelf. A lot of toy lines lately seem to concentrate on endless variations of the main characters, so I appreciate that NECA is willing to go deep into the villains roster and make more foes for the Turtles to fight! Thanks again to NECA for sending these along!
