Four Horsemen Studios: Mythic Legions Advent of Decay Cavern Dwarf Legion Builder

I didn’t figure out that I wanted to collect all the Mythic Legions Dwarves until way after the first wave sold out, so I’ve been playing catch-up ever since. I’m getting closer since I was able to order the silver Dwarf Legion builder and Jorund Runeshaper in the All-Stars 2 sale. I still need the Bronze Legion Builder,  Bothar Shadowhorn, and I’ll probably never get the exclusive Valgard, so there was no way I was letting Advent of Decay go by without picking up the Cavern Dwarf. Let’s take a look!

The Cavern Dwarf is a Legion Builder figure, so he’s got a little less paint and costs a little less money, but still comes packaged in the awesome collector friendly box with a ton of accessories.

The Cavern Dwarf comes with a shield, two small axes, a massive hammer, three wing attachment pieces, a weapons strap, two removeable armored shoulder pads, two heads, and two removeable horns.

The shield is really neat. It has this great inlaid dwarven carving on the front and the centerpiece of the shield can come off.

The peg that the handle attaches to comes with the circular part, so you can’t use the shield without it. I would guess that the 4H made it two pieces to allow swapping across figures or future different center pieces.

One of the axes is a new piece from the new Dwarf weapons packs with less paint.

The other looks like a repaint of the axe that came with Weapons Pack Four from the original Mythic Legions Kickstarter. I didn’t pick up that pack, so I’m glad to have the axe now.

I love the look of both and both feel like appropriate Dwarf weapons, though I think I would have preferred two of the matching new axes for dual wielding. Hmm…that might be a good argument for picking up another Cavern Dwarf.

The hammer is from one of the first ML weapons packs and has since seen re-release with figures like Jjuno the crusher and Halmyr. To my mind, it’s a perfect weapon for a Dwarf and looks fantastic in this slightly-coppery metallic gray. My figure did not include the extra piece for the hammer that allows you to remove one hammer edge and replace it with a claw.

The back attachment pieces are interesting because this is the first one I’ve seen that are designed for the bigger figures.

They work just like the attachment pieces we’ve seen in the smaller Advent of Decay figures, but these plug into the open spot on the back of the larger figures from Mythic Legions 1.0 like the Skeletons or Gideon Heavensbrand.

The horns are the larger ones from Thord Ironjaw. The heads are the legion builder, masked head that has no beard and the bearded head with the mask that we saw with Bothar Shadowhorn and Sir Valgard.

Both are fantastic sculpts. I like the more generic look of the masked head with no beard for an army builder, but a dwarf without a beard feels a little weird to me still.

The large horns look great, but I do kind of wish there were some smaller horns for the masked head or perhaps some coverings for the empty sockets.

The articulation is Mythic Legions standard with:

  • Ball and socket neck and lower torso
  • Swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles
  • Swivel thighs, forearms, horns, and shoulder pads

The Cavern Dwarf has a beautiful metallic copper finish with sturdy looking slightly-coppery metallic gray accessories. The paint is a little less flashy on these guys, which is part of the deal, but the metallic paint is so nice, I really only miss it on the wood handle on one of the axes. The copper is so, so good.

The cavern dwarf is another great addition to this line-up. I really like the weapons and accessory choices and the paint finish on this guy. I did find myself wishing for more horn options, but the ones he came with look fantastic on both heads and you can position them in a few interesting ways.

Again I find myself wishing I picked up another one. I saw D Amazing on youtube had the bearded dwarf leading a squad with two masked dwarves and it looked amazing! Aside from the army building potential, he still looks cool as a unique soldier grouped with my dwarf legion.
