Hasbro: Marvel Legends Archangel Review

I missed out on the recent Marvel Legends Archangel figures, so I was very excited when this deluxe figure was announced. Even though I was excited, I kept forgetting to pre-order it. Fortunately for me, a local comic book store had a bunch of damaged box Archangels for sale at regular retail price the other day. Let’s take a look at Marvel’s Archangel!

Walter and Louise Simonson had a great run on the X-Factor comic and Warren Worthington’s transformation into Archangel was one of the highlights of the book. I have a real nostalgia for Angel’s “Death” persona and that costume design.

The figure comes in an oversized box of familiar style. It shows the figure off well and the illustration on the side is nice.

The figure looks to be based on the old Bucky Cap body with an elaborate set of wings. The body, while overly familiar, works well for Warren. The figure comes with removeable wings, a claw for Apocalypse, and three extra heads.

The wings are huge and painted in very nice shiny silver paint. They are hinged in the middle of the wing and attach to the back at an extra backpack piece that plugs into a hole in the back of the figure. The wings also articulate where they attach to the back with a swivel hinge.

The main extra head is a hooded mask painted like a golden skull. It’s the mask that Warren wore as Apocalypse’s Horseman Death.

The skull mask is painted gold, but it seems to me it would be better in yellow, closer to the original comic book look. I also wish the “teeth” had a few more tiny lines.

The unmasked heads appear to be repaints of the heads that came with Adam Warlock. They both look good on the body and I like them even though I don’t remember the storyline where Angel looked like this.

I especially like how evil this head looks. It’s a fantastic sculpt and though I don’t much care for re-using head sculpts in the same line, I think it’s fairly effective here.

The claw arm can be attached to Apocalypse, all you have to do is pop off his hand and gauntlet and replace them with the claw.

It has some sturdy detents that allow the claw to open and close and hold position.

The paint is good. I do think the red markings on the costume could stand to be a bit more purple in hue. The highlight is the silver on the wings. It’s quite striking.

Overall, this is a pretty great set. I think the size of the wings and the extras justifies the extra cost, though I would have liked an extra set of chop hands for flight poses.
