I just got the Rex with the photo-real face paint and I’ve been seeing lots of early shots of the upcoming Gamestop/Disney Store exclusive Clone Commander Wolfe, and that has me thinking about what clones I want to see next. I’m not a huge prequels guy, but I enjoyed a lot of the Clone Wars cartoon and I’ve noticed a lot of love for the clones among the younger guys who mercilessly kill me in Battlefront II all the time, so I think there’s a market there. I know Hasbro must like the economics of the parts re-use, more clones seem inevitable, so today I’m going to count down my top five most wanted Clone Troopers!
I always like to start these top five lists with a couple of runners up and I would definitely be interested in figures that could represent some of the specific classes in Battlefront II, especially the Heavy with that massive cannon and shield, the rocket trooper, and the specialist with the goggles and sniper rifle. The Kashyykk green might be good to go with the rest of the green troops that came in the Clone Trooper four pack.
My next runner up would be some plain Wolf Pack soldiers for the upcoming Wolfe figure to lead. Sideshow did an amazing set that came with a rocket pack and backpack that would be so great to get in the six inch scale.
Finally, I’m always down for more Rebels figures, so I’d love figures of the older Rex, Wolfe and Gregor.
5. Commander Fox
Commander Fox was in a few episodes and while his personality didn’t make a huge impact with me, his armor paint job struck me as particularly cool.
He would also be particularly useful for my collection in that I could add him to the ranks of red Coruscant guards I already own from the four-pack.
4. Waxer and Boil
It’s hard to think of one of these guys without the other because they made their impression in a cool episode that took place on Ryloth, the home of the Twi’lek people. Waxer and Boil make friends with a young local Twi’lek named Numa and they end up helping each other survive until the next battle.
Waxer has a pretty bitch’n ’70s ‘stache going on and Boil is a bit more generic bald guy. They both have the standard 212th attack battalion armors, so we are really only talking about new head and helmet deco here.
Sideshow did an incredible set of these two, even included a little Numa figure as well. I don’t expect Hasbro to do that, but Waxer and Boil would be a great start. On a side note, Numa does grow up to fight with the Rebel Alliance and made an appearance or two in Rebels.
Kix is the Medic from Anakin’s 501st Attack Battalion. He always stood out to me because of the elaborate head tattoo design. I also like to differentiate the clones into their particular specialties, it reminds me of GI Joe for some reason.
I personally think that Kix probably had something to do with the Clones Gregor, Rex and Wolfe removing the control chips from their heads, though that hasn’t been confirmed.
2. Echo
Echo is one of the very first clones we meet in the episode “Rookies” and his back story gets further fleshed out and we see his training in “Clone Cadets” and finally his promotion to ARC Trooper in “ARC Troopers”. He’s always confused me because he hangs out with a clone named “Fives”, but he has a five fingered hand print on his chest. The cool thing is, we see how he gets that hand print as mark of survival in battle.
The ARC Trooper armor is a slick variant on the regular armor and would make for a striking toy. Sideshow already made a pretty amazing 12 inch figure, so there’s a perfect template to follow there.
CT 5555 earns the top spot because, like Echo, you get to know him over several episodes and see his growth probably more than any clone outside of Rex. He has the cool ARC Trooper gear and I think he and Echo would look amazing flanking Rex and the rest of the 501st. We see him grow from an almost washed out Rookie to an elite soldier.
Fives has one of the most compelling clone arcs at the end of the Clone Wars where he discovers the conspiracy behind order 66 and is almost successful in preventing the entire Jedi massacre. During that story he teams up with a Medical droid, AZ-23 who has a really lovely design that’s calling for a figure.
Fives exemplifies a lot of the ideas in the Clone Wars series about the clones, that they weren’t just expendable organic droids, that they were individuals and people. When you start thinking about clones that way, I feel like it adds a bit of depth to the Clone Wars conflict.
