I have been really excited by all of the Thor: Ragnarok promotional material thus far, so I’ve scooped up all the figures as soon as possible. The latest release is the two-pack with Thor and Valkyrie. Let’s take a look!
The figures come in the now familiar two-pack window box that shows off the figures well and features some impressive character artwork on the sides of the box.
Thor comes with Heimdall’s sword, two extra set of open hands, and a lightning effect. The sword is pretty rad as it has really nice carved details in the handle, pommel, and guard. The gold is kind of a bland plastic, so that’s a little disappointing, but otherwise it’s a nice, solid weapon.
The lighting effect is cast in really soft plastic and wraps nicely around the arms and hand.
The hands work well for lightning casting gestures.
Thor is mostly the same figure as the one released in the Hulk Marvel Legends wave, but he doesn’t have the helmet and he doesn’t have the right leg guard.
The articulation is Marvel Legends standard:
- Double-hinged knees and elbows
- Swivel/hinge neck, shoulders, wrists, hips, and ankles
- Swivel waist, bicep, and thigh
- Hinged mid-torso
- Ball-and-socket head
The articulation moves pretty well and I like that the wrists for the sword holding hands hinge up/down for some cooler sword holding poses. The shoulder pad does block the raising of his arm somewhat as well.
Valkyrie is an all-new figure with a beautifully detailed sculpt that matches what I’ve seen of the MCU version of Valkyrie we’ve seen in trailers. Well, one outfit anyway.
It’s not very much like the traditional Valkyrie costume, but it looks like maybe she works for Goldblum’s Grandmaster, so the design aesthetic that recalls some of the Guardians of the Galaxy-style costumes makes sense.
The head sculpt is fantastic and matches actress Tessa Thompson perfectly.
Valkyrie comes with a sword and a scabbard. The sword and scabbard are both made of extremely floppy plastic. I can’t quite figure how the scabbard attaches and could only think to place it under the belt.
The articulation is standard Marvel Legends female:
- Ball-and-socket head and mid torso
- Swivel/hinge neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, wrists, and ankles
- Double-hinged knees
- Swivel waist and thigh
The mid-torso ball joint has a nice range of movement. I wish the Star Wars figures that used this joint moved this well.
The face painting technique they use works great here and there is also a nice metallic sheen on the armor.
Overall these two figures are both quite effective. They both both move well and have enough accessories to motivate some interesting poses. I can’t wait to see Valkyrie in action because I’m already a fan just based on the figure.
