Suicide Squad may have been a movie mostly about helicopter crashes, but it also included some interesting interpretations of classic comic characters like Joker and Deadshot. I was wary of the designs initially, but I ended up enjoying the film, so I’ve been all-in on S.H. Figuarts figures from Suicide Squad. Let’s take a look at the latest figure from that film: The Joker!
The Joker comes with three sets of hands (fist, open, and trigger), two guns, and two head sculpts.
The head sculpts are both great portraits with good likenesses. I was a little surprised that they did a completely neutral head sculpt, but I ended up liking it quite a bit.
I think part of the reason I like it is because when the Joker stops laughing, he’s almost more scary. The guns are pretty neat with their bright, metallic purple color.
The hands swap easily except for the fists. The holes in the fists seem smaller than the others and it was pretty scary trying to get them on the wrists securely. I almost felt like I was bending the peg when I was putting them on.
One thing to watch out for when swapping the hands is the bracelets. They are loose and will easily fly off when you are pulling the hands off.
The overall sculpt matches Leto pretty well in his Scarface/’50s lounge singer outfit. I do like that even though his shirt covers his chest tattoos, they are still there peaking out under the collar. The neck is slightly too long, but it allows for a great range of expressive movement.
The articulation is pretty standard for the Figuarts line:
- Ball/socket neck, head, upper torso, lower torso, ankles, and shoulders
- Swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hips
- Hinged pecs, toes, and knees
He moves pretty well, though I don’t really love the hips. They look great in more neutral poses, but running and lunging looks a little awkward.
The paint is good. I especially like the shiny silver jacket and gold jewelry. The face paint is so great at normal viewing distance, though looks really spotty magnified through a camera lens.
Overall, I’m really pleased with this figure as he’s a great representation of Leto’s Joker. He’s a great companion for the earlier Harley and looks great posed with her on the shelf. I think the only thing I would have added to this figure would be a hand posed better so that he could put his smile tattoo over his mouth a little better.
