The Four Horsemen Studios team is currently raising funds for an expansion of their Mythic Legions line and they are fully funded and quickly blowing through stretch goals. There is more to the Mythic Legions world than this current expansion. For example, today we are going to take a look at a creature that expands the world of Mythoss in a massive way: The Deluxe Stone Troll!
Like many of the Mythic Legions figures, I fell in love with the Stone Troll at SDCC. They debuted the prototype there back in 2015 and the sculpt of this final figure lived up to the promise of that original prototype. That prototype was posed holding a knight in his hand and I was fascinated by the sense of scale.
When the Four Horsemen put the Stone Troll and a Forrest Troll variant up for pre-order early last year, I had to snap up one of the trolls. It’s been a long wait, but I feel like it was worth it.
The box features some fantastic art by Nate Baertsch that actually shows off a few different varieties of trolls. I could go for that cyclops.
The Stone Troll comes with a massive hammer that looks like it was made from a boulder welded to a tree trunk. It’s a savage-looking weapon that has tons of super sharp sculpted detail. There is plenty of paint that highlights all of that detail too. The hammer pops apart, but it stays together well.
The sculpt translated very well from the prototype and the Troll has an overall imposing silhouette with powerfully long arms and tree-trunk like legs. There is a little mixed media with a couple different types of soft goods on the loincloth that fits in well with the sculpted material.
The details are incredibly sharp with great skin texture and hammered metal detail on the belt and the bracelets. The skin texture is so detailed you can see the dang fingerprints on the hands. I’m also really impressed with how the rocky texture transitions to the more rough elephant like skin texture.
The paint is quite good. There is some subtle transition between the gray and pink parts of the skin and lots of shading to bring out details. Even the loincloth has a little bit of dirty weathering. I do wish there was a bit of a wash on the back to bring out the rocky, craggy details more.
The articulation is somewhat limited with the following POA:
- Swivel wrists, waist and hips
- Swivel/hinged elbows and shoulders
- Ball-and-socket neck and feet
The movement on the neck and ankle ball joints are pretty limited, working mostly like a swivel. The shoulders can raise a bit and the elbows don’t quite get a 90-degree bend. Those swivel/hinge joints have a really tight ratchets inside that help hold the pose.
Overall, this is a stunning figure, if not the most articulated. The sculpt and paint are top notch and he adds a sense of scope to the world of Mythoss with the massive size. I love the way this guy looks posed with regular figures; he’s so imposing.
At $100, it’s not a cheap figure and the 4H aren’t currently offering it for pre-order. I have a feeling that we will see more trolls from the Mythic Legions line before it’s all done.
