Dormammu is the Build-A-Figure (BAF) from the recent Dr. Strange Movie line of action figures. Yay.
I’ll now qualify that “yay.” Technically this is a re-release. Old Dormy first appeared in the 2015 SDCC box set (reviewed here) that sold out. Not a lot of people had access to him, and Internet justice demanded heads. Instead, Hasbro chose to re-release the figure, almost 100 percent the same, as a BAF. Makes sense, figure sells out, Hasbro offers another chance. But I just can’t get excited about Dormy.
I don’t know why because I am one of the people who missed out on him. But for some reason I’d rather this spot go to some character that hasn’t been made. Call me crazy, I think I am. Because I should be super excited, but I’m not.
The only differences that I can see on this figure vs the SDCC figure are the hands. There might be more, but I don’t have the SDCC one for direct comparison. But it looks like the hands are clear on the SDCC version and not clear on the BAF version. The other change that I can see, the accessory heads have a different paint app. That’s it.
With that said, well there isn’t much to say. I like this figure as a base figure; there is a ton of custom potential, but I would like it if Hasbro dropped the current ball hips and upgraded the buck with the barbell hips. That would add a bit of consistency in the shelf display. Barbell, barbell, barbell, classic ball hips, barbell, barbell — you get the picture.
On that note, it’s time to sign off. I promised a short Winter Soldier review and started babbling, so I’ll see it short here. As a character, Dormammu is a critical part of your Marvel Legends collection, but as a figure to collect, I can’t get excited about him. You can pick him up here:
