Even though the S.H. Figuarts Suicide Squad Joker appeared at a show months ago Bandai is just now releasing official pics while not giving a lot of info. Odd.
Especially since they went whole-hog with the Harley release, who in turn sold out very quickly. Less confidence in Leto’s version of the Joker? I don’t know but there also seems to be something missing from this figure.
It just seems lifeless. And I know that’s weird coming from me since I’m always touting the awesomeness of Figuarts. But I look at this figure and the spark isn’t there. It looks like a good action figure, no doubt, but given how amazingly life-like Harley’s facial expressions look it’s a bummer that Joker seems to be phoning his smile in. The mouth is smiling but the rest of the face is just….bored. And don’t get me started on the alternate head.
Again, I get what Bandai was going for here but Joker doesn’t just look like he’s thinking about something, he looks like he’s a wax museum statue attempting to look like Leto thinking about what his Joker would look like if his Joker was attempting to think about something. I started that sentence not knowing where I was going with it so if it doesn’t make sense that’s totally on me. I accept full responsibility.
It’s blasphemy at this point but I like the look of the MAFEX Joker better, both the suit version and the trenchcoat, at least when it comes to the heads. Crazy because, well, MAFEX.
And I don’t think is a case of the face printing tech looking weird in pics, like we see a lot. The actual sculpt is what is throwing me off here.
What a weird Sunday this has turned out to be, griping about a Figuarts release. Next thing you know I’ll be hating on a model kit.
