Four Horsemen Studios: Mythic Legions Sir Gideon Heavensbrand

Sir Gideon Heavensbrand_01The Mythic Legions line allows the Four Horsemen to create legions of not only monsters and undead soldiers, but heroic knights as well. I tend to favor the monstrous figures, but many of the classic knight figures in this line were extremely appealing. One shining knight stood out to me above the rest: Sir Gideon Heavensbrand. Let’s take a look!

Sir Gideon Heavensbrand_02Sir Gideon immediately recalls to me the heroic knights as illustrated on old D&D ads and manuals from my youth. His bio lists him as a courageous leader of a once disgraced order who is returning that order to its former glory. I believe that completely, and he looks damn heroic in his shining white tunic and gold and silver armor.

Sir Gideon Heavensbrand_03Sculpt

The armor is fantastically detailed, and Sir Gideon has a classically handsome noble visage poking out of an elaborately decorated helmet. The helmet is sculpted like the visor is up, but it’s on a peg so it can be repositioned to look like it’s pulled down.

Sir Gideon Heavensbrand_04

It’s a brilliant feature that works perfectly and I love it. The wings on the sides are removable as is the eagle at the top, but I don’t have much to replace them with at this point. A feather would have been cool to include, but there is already so much good stuff included I can’t complain.

Sir Gideon Heavensbrand_05Sir Gideon comes with a short sword, a dagger, a shield, a chest strap to hold a weapon, two removable shoulder pads, and an alternate helmet. The alternate helmet is also a thing of beauty and painted to match the armor.

It has a port on top to add the eagle ornament or some other item the 4H come up with. Both helmets look so great, it’s hard to choose between them for me. The shoulder pads are a little thinner than Thord’s so they don’t get in the way of movement hardly at all. You can put one or both pads on or none and it all looks great.

The sword is a different sculpt from the swords that came with my skeletons; it’s shorter but similarly sharply sculpted. The shield feels a little plain, like it could use some weathering overspray, but I love the symbol.

Sir Gideon Heavensbrand_14Articulation

Sir Gideon has the following articulation:

  • Ball-and-socket head and torso
  • Swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, wrists, and ankles
  • Swivel gloves, thighs, and neck
  • Hinged shoulder pads

The movement is all really nice. The skirts do not hinder leg movement at all, but the shoulder pads do hinder arm movement a little bit, though it’s not too bad.

Sir Gideon Heavensbrand_15I’m really impressed at how useful and stable the articulation is even though he’s fully armored. The two-handed sword holding pose could be a little better though. It’s a little tough to get in that pose.

Sir Gideon Heavensbrand_16Paint

Paint is nice without slop. The metallics are good and shiny and precise. There is some weathering on the skirt that is a little dark for my taste, but it is nicely done.

Sir Gideon Heavensbrand_17Overall

Like with Thord Ironjaw, I find myself wishing I’d grabbed a couple more knights to fight alongside Sir Gideon. Still, it’s really great to have him fighting alongside Thord against my skeleton horde.
