“There’s no hope for me… or you or your city. Everyone’s going to feel my loss.”
As part of their first wave of Batman Animated figures (including Batman, Catwoman, and Two Face), DC Collectibles recently released the notorious Victor Fries, AKA Mr. Freeze, based on the style of the New Batman Adventures.
Whatever quality control problems DC Collectibles was having with the Catwoman figure from the line, they definitely aren’t having that problem with this figure. Mr. Freeze is wicked articulate. Surprisingly articulate, actually. He’s got 26 points of articulation that include ball joints in his neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and even the torso.
The sculpt of the figure is an excellent rendering of the New Batman Adventures version of Freeze — what, with his beady red eyes sunken into that pale white skull behind the (in this case) plastic dome. Another nice touch? That dome is removable, so you can turn Victor’s head whichever way you deem important.
One of the best features of the figure, though, is his removable head. Why, per se, would you want to remove his head? So you can recreate that horrifying moment in the episode “Cold Comfort”, of course! You know the one: that point when Freeze’s head disengages from his robot body via four mechanical legs (all bomarr monk like).
Well, you too can do that with this version of Mr. Freeze. The figure includes the four mechanical legs (they don’t fold up into his body or anything) needed to recreate said scene. And while definitely cool, it was a bit difficult attaching the spider legs to his head. You gotta really push the legs into the pre-made holes in the base of his head. Once they’re in, they’re fairly secure and support Freeze’s head well. Plus, they’re poseable. Just don’t be surprised if you find yourself apply more pressure to get the legs into those holes than you might’ve anticipated.
Like the rest of the figures in the Animated Series line, Mr. Freeze comes with a bunch of other accessories. He comes with three sets of hands (closed, slightly opened, and completely opened), a freeze gun, and stand (with Mr. Freeze turnarounds printed on it). The stand is a welcome addition for these figures. It makes posing them so much easier, especially since they all tend to be top heavy.
At $24.99, the New Batman Adventures Mr. Freeze is definitely worth it (even if he was only in one episode from the show). Freeze is available now for purchase online and at your local comic shop.
