The Curious Case of the Knockoff (?) Iron Man Mark 42

Marvel Legends Select Knock Off Iron Man MK 42 Armor 6 Loose Action Figure Featured 2

A new Iron Man has popped up on eBay but the figure is a mystery.

A few weeks ago these images popped up on the forums, from a Chinese eBay auction.

Quite an odd addition with the Infinity Gauntlet, but it does look great. Also of interest is the unmasked Tony head that also looks fantastic. In fact the overall look and paint job is superb. There wasn’t a lot more information given and it was assumed that it was a knock off of a Marvel Select figure with some additional pieces, maybe a shrunken Hot Toys Stark head? Plus this is the Mark 43, which goes against the grain of the rest of this article.

Fast forward to today and these Iron Man Mark 42s started popping up on eBay from overseas.

One seller even has one in packaging that I have never seen before. Spiff.

This auction has a blister package and some nice turnarounds.

That’s all fine and dandy, but we were still unsure of size and from what figure it was knocked off. I personally still assumed it was the Select version, not having that figure. All the current auctions are also missing the Infinity Gauntlet and Stark heads and not all of them offer all the same number of hands. Enter the crackhead for some clarification.

From forum member crackhead9000:

I bought one of these recently that was the MK42 armor hoping it was a KO of the Select figure. If this is the same figure, which based on accessories I would guess it is, it’s actually 6 inch scale. It doesn’t have a cut for the thighs or upper arms, and the wrists, shoulders, ankles and gauntlets are all on a joint similar to the revoltech joints. It’s a nice looking figure with decent articulation except for the hips/thighs. Great for your ML. Not so much for MS.

Marvel Select on the left, KO in the middle, and Hasbro on the right. If it is a KO, I’m not sure what the original figure is. The sculpt and articulation breakdown are different from the two MK42’s I have. It comes with two sets of open hands and two sets of fists. It also comes with extra joints to connect them with.

So there you go. We now know both a little more about the figure, while knowing a bit less.

We know it’s not technically a knock off, unless there is some unknown figure that I am forgetting. We know it’s actually 1:12 scale and actually looks a little bit better than the Marvel Legends Iron Man in both size and proportions. I really like his stance and posture.

But like I said, we also know less. We know it’s not a KO of either the Select or Legends, the sculpts have definite differences. The joint setup is also different all around. You can see the Revoltech joints crackhead mentioned in the pic below.

So where did this figure come from? Is it even a knock off? The only things that scream KO at me now is the price of >$20, the iffy paint in some of the pics, and the origin of the auctions.

Oh, and there is a Mark 43 version up right now.

Again, without the nifty extra accessories. Maybe the original auction was a custom based on this new mystery figure? Although, now that I look closer, it does seem to be based on the Select figure. The paint job seems to point in that direction.

Now, I am not condoning the practice of knock offs. But at this point can we even say this is KO? To me, this is a cheap oddity that may be too tempting to pass up, to at least give it a go. I’m a sucker like that.
