The Silver Centurion Iron Man armor, or the Model 8 as it is referred to in online publications. You’ll note that yesterday I went with Mark as the nomenclature and today I decided to see if you were paying attention. Fact is most people refer to Toy Biz Marvel Legends Series 7 Iron Man as Silver Centurion.
This was the first post Mark 4 armor (that Tony Stark wore, from ’76 through ’85) when he made a dramatic switch to the red and silver armor. This was the armor that he used during the armor wars and went nuts on the Marvel Universe in order to get his stolen tech back after years of non functional alcoholism. It was also the armor worn in the famous showdown between Iron Man and Iron Monger. Classic comic story telling.
The figure is based on the Toy Biz Series 1 action figure with some new parts. There is a new helmet, face mask, shoulder pads, armor collar, triangle chest piece, waist armor, boots, and gloves. The hands and feet on the last part are the original parts. It’s quite a bit of new sculpt into this classic figure and looks ok. There’s something off about the integration of the new pieces compared to the previous Model 4. For one, the added parts are very busy with different pieces of tech that don’t gel with the comics armor look. In addition the face plate is wider on one side than the other. It’s a very odd shape and doesn’t sit well on the figure. But the new busy parts seem to be the real issue as they distract from the super sleek feel of the way the armor was drawn in the comics.
Luckily non of the new parts affected the great articulation. Although by this point the Series 6 Wolverine was released with updated rocker shoulders and it would have been great to see Iron Man refitted with the new shoulders. Otherwise it’s the same articulation as before. Here is the breakdown:
Rocker ankles
Hinged ankles
Swivel calves
Double hinged knees
Thigh swivels
Ball hips
Ball waist
Ball chest
Rocker shoulders
Ball shoulders
Swivel biceps
Double hinged elbows
Swivel forearms
Hinged wrists
Hinged fingers
Ball neck
Ball head
The figure does come with an accessory, no base just a strap on rocket. This was the nuke used in the comics to kill Iron Man during his battle with Firepower. It’s an ok attachment, not great, but a fantastic nod to a great story arc in the comics. As you can see in the pictures the belt is impossible to click into place, whether or not this was an issue for all the figures is for readers to provide feedback.
