Hasbro: Star Wars Black Series Bossk

Bossk was my favorite reveal from SDCC 2014 and one of my favorite Star Wars figures growing up, so when I saw him available early on ebay I had to grab one. Let’s take a closer look at everybody’s favorite Trandoshan Bounty Hunter, Bossk!

Accessories

Bossk comes with his rifle and that’s it. Now, there does seem to be a trend of fewer and fewer accessories with these black series figures, but I honestly don’t know what else needs to come with Bossk.

The gun is cast in somewhat flexible black plastic and has no paint. The strap on the gun is a separate piece of flexible plastic that is connected on loops. This allows the rifle to be posed in a few different ways, including the over the shoulder look seen in The Empire Strikes Back and a standard firing position.

Sculpt

Bossk has a great sculpt. The head looks pretty film accurate and sports a great deal of scaley detail.

The flight suit is appropriately wrinkly and all of the life support tubes and pilot straps are separate raised pieces which adds a nice depth to the sculpt. His left hand is sculpted in a gripping pose that fits his rifle well and the right hand in splayed open.

This fits the look in the film, but it is a little weird to a vintage era kid like myself who grew used to posing Bossk holding his gun in his right hand by the front support stalk. I was able to fake that a bit using the strap, so even that is not really a valid criticism.

The highlight of the sculpt  for me is probably the articulating jaw. I was a little nervous about this feature detracting from the overall figure, but the hinged jaw is well integrated into the sculpt.

Articulation

• Bossk has the following articulation:
• Swivel/hinged neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, wrists, and ankles
• Ball jointed torso
• Swivel thighs and calves
• Double hinged knees

The articulation works well with the exception of the ball jointed torso. On my Bossk it’s a little stiff and works mostly as a swivel.

I also wish the neck joint had a ball and socket in addition to the swivel/hinge so I could get some side to side movement when he stares down at stuffed shirt imperials.

Paint

Paint is very nice on Bossk. The scaley sculpt of the head, arms and legs is nicely highlighted with a greyish brown wash. The details are nice and sharp on all the tiny pieces like his mortar shells on his leg straps, his tiny little teeth and the pink tongue in his mouth.

Overall

Bossk was one of my favorite Star Wars figures in the original vintage line and I made up many a back story for my well-worn vintage Bossk figure (he was Chewie’s arch-enemy in my stories).

I have a distinct memory of the first time I saw a Bossk figure long before seeing him in the film, so Bossk was at the top of my list for Star Wars black and the final figure does not disappoint.

With IG-88 on the way in the future, it looks like we may be able to complete the ESB bounty hunter group in the black series. I’m personally hoping for Dengar next.
